Unlock Hips and Hamstrings with Traditional Prop-Based Yoga
Flexibility is not about pushing, it is about releasing. We use traditional props and partner-assisted techniques to help you safely open your hips and hamstrings at your own pace.
This video shows a partner-assisted middle split using a strap. This technique allows for a deep, controlled stretch of the adductor muscles.

This advanced split with a deep backbend is practiced here with the support of a chair. This shows how we use props to safely explore extreme ranges of motion.

This is a very advanced middle split using a wall and ropes. This Iyengar-inspired setup allows for an incredibly deep and passive hip-opening stretch.
Students use straps to work on their flexibility in this group class. The first pose is a variation of Hanumanasana, and the second is a hip opener.

About Unlocking Flexibility: Hips & Hamstrings
Developing flexibility is not about forcing the body into a pose; it is about creating the right environment for your muscles to release. In our classes, we never rush the process. Instead, we use straps, blocks, chairs, and partner-assisted adjustments to work with your current range of motion. This approach allows your body to lengthen naturally, protecting your joints while ensuring you make real progress with every session.
Why Props Matter for Flexibility
Many people struggle with splits and forward folds because they try to force their body past its limits. This often leads to micro-tears and long-term joint pain. Our method, heavily influenced by the Iyengar tradition, focuses on the strategic use of props. A block under your hand or a strap around your foot doesn't make a pose easier; it makes it safer and more effective. It allows you to maintain proper alignment while giving your connective tissue the time and support it needs to open up.
Our Approach to Hip & Hamstring Opening
We break down complex poses into manageable, step-by-step sequences. Whether you are working toward the middle split or just trying to touch your toes, we focus on:
- Safe Alignment: Ensuring your pelvis and spine are stable so your legs can stretch without straining your lower back.
- Partner Support: Using partner-assisted stretching to provide gentle resistance and depth that you cannot achieve alone.
- Consistency: Flexibility is a result of consistent, daily practice. We help you build a routine that builds heat, releases tension, and improves your range of motion without the need for extreme force.
A Community of Practice
In our Rishikesh school, we don't just teach classes; we build a family. You will find that practicing alongside others—each with their own challenges—creates a supportive atmosphere. You see that everyone is working on something, and that shared effort makes the tough days of practice much easier. We focus on the discipline of the breath, because as we say, shwaas jeevan ka doosra naam hai (breath is the second name of life). When the breath is steady, the body follows.
