Mastering Splits and Hip Openers with Expert Guidance
Splits are not about being born flexible; they are about patient, consistent practice. Whether you are working toward your RYT-200 certification or simply want to open your hips, I focus on safe, prop-assisted drills to help you progress without injury.
Achieving happy splits is easier when you practice the right drills. This video shows a sequence of preparatory movements, including lizard pose and side lunges, that we teach to open the hips and prepare the body for Hanumanasana.
Using the wall ropes, a technique inspired by Iyengar yoga, allows for a deep and supported split. An instructor provides assistance to ensure proper alignment and help the student relax into the stretch, finding peace even in an intense posture.
A moment of focus and surrender in Hanumanasana, the full front split. This posture is a powerful hip opener that we approach with careful preparation, focusing on lengthening the hamstrings and psoas muscles.
"Come and join me, explore the energy." This video shows a student moving through a sequence of wide-angled seated forward bends, a key practice for opening the hips and preparing the body for deeper stretches and splits.
Keep working for your goals. Here, we use a resistance band and wall ropes to assist a student in a split variation, a creative method to build active flexibility and strength simultaneously.
Yoga teaches you to go beyond your perceived potential. This video shows an instructor gracefully moving through a flow that culminates in a full split, demonstrating the strength, flexibility, and control developed through dedicated practice.
This image shows a hands-on adjustment for a deep forward fold over one leg, a preparatory pose for Hanumanasana. The instructor's guidance helps the student to release tension in the hamstring and deepen the stretch safely.
Using the wall for support is an excellent way to work on standing splits. Here, an instructor assists a student in lifting their leg higher while maintaining balance and alignment, targeting the hamstrings and hip flexors.
This image captures a moment of deep surrender in a prone split variation. This passive stretch is a great way to increase hip mobility and is often included in our sequences designed to work towards the full splits.
An instructor provides gentle assistance to a student using the wall ropes for a supported standing split. This technique helps to isolate the stretch in the hamstrings and allows for a greater range of motion.
About Achieving Full Expression: Splits & Hip Openers
You might think splits require natural flexibility, but that is a misconception. In my studio, we avoid forcing the body into positions. Instead, we use wall ropes, blocks, and specific Hatha drills to progressively lengthen your hamstrings and hip flexors, ensuring you reach your goal safely.
The Journey to Hanumanasana
Many students come to me thinking they aren't 'built' for splits. I tell them the same thing: yoga is for the willing, not the perfect. Achieving Hanumanasana (full front splits) is a process of unlearning tension in the hips and hamstrings.
Why Props Are Essential
I rely heavily on the Iyengar methodology in my Janakpuri studio. We don't just sit and stretch. We use wall ropes, bolsters, and blocks to create geometric precision. By using props, you can hold the preparatory poses for longer, allowing your nervous system to relax and release the muscles that are holding you back. This is where the real transformation happens.
An Anatomy-First Approach
As a BNYS doctor, I teach with a focus on your musculoskeletal health. We don't push until it hurts. We work on alignment, square hips, and steady breathing. Whether you are training to become a certified teacher or attending a general class, you will learn to understand the 'why' behind every stretch.
We keep our batches small, usually 8-12 students, so I can provide personal adjustments. This ensures you aren't just copying a pose, but actually developing the flexibility and strength needed to sustain it. If you have been struggling with 'nahi hoga' (it won't happen), come see how a structured, step-by-step approach changes everything.
