mytribe vs asking friends and family. The oldest way to find somebody, and where it runs out.

Asking around is how most good things get booked in India, and it works. It also runs out fast, and everyone has felt it: two names in the family WhatsApp group, both busy, and no third option.

The difference in one line.

Your cousin has hired 2 decorators. We have hired 1,000.

An honest look at the same job, from both sides.

The recommendation is based on

Asking around: One person’s one experience.mytribe: Everything we know about that provider, and every job they have done through us.

How many options

Asking around: Whoever somebody happens to know.mytribe: 3 or 4 picked for your brief specifically.

Do they know your taste

Asking around: Yes, and that is the real advantage.mytribe: We ask, and we write down what you tell us.

What they know about the provider

Asking around: How that one job went for them.mytribe: What they are good at and what they are not, their real prices, and what went wrong on other jobs. We call it their Kundli.

What they know about the market

Asking around: One or two prices, from a while ago.mytribe: What things cost now, what goes wrong in that category, what to ask before you book.

Free on your date

Asking around: You find out after three days of messages.mytribe: We ask them.

Price

Asking around: Whatever they charged your cousin, for a different job.mytribe: A number built for your brief.

Awkwardness

Asking around: Real. Turning down a friend’s recommendation costs something.mytribe: None. Say no and we bring you others.

If nobody fits

Asking around: You are out of names.mytribe: We go and find somebody. Usually inside 24 hours.

What it costs you

Asking around: A favour.mytribe: Nothing. The provider pays a small fee on a confirmed booking.

What a friend is better at, honestly.

A friend knows you. They know you hate clutter, that your mother-in-law will comment on the flowers, that you say a number and mean 20% more. That is worth a lot and no filter has it.

What a friend cannot do is know 100 decorators. They know one, who did their thing, which was a different thing.

So we tried to build the friend who knows everyone. We ask what you actually care about, the way a friend would, and then we pick from people we have all met.

Neither is right for everyone. Here is how to tell.

Use asking around when somebody you trust has done exactly your thing.

  • They did it recently, in your area.
  • The job is small and being wrong is cheap.
  • You would enjoy the conversation anyway.

Hand it to us when you have run out of names.

  • The two names you got are both busy.
  • Nobody you know has done this before.
  • You want to compare real prices without asking for a favour.
  • You want to be able to say no without it being awkward.
  • Every booking teaches the system something about that category, the next person will get a better answer than you will get.

Fast is easy. Fast and right is the hard part.

Because anyone can be fast, this list is instant, definitely, but also of no use. Fast answers are good but they are worth having only if somebody already knew the exact answer to what you're asking.

When we keep a file on providers, it is not their marketing content. For example their Instagram is actually their best work, which is chosen by them only but our file says what they are actually good at and where they are not good. What will they charge at 5,000? What will they charge at 20,000? If it's a photographer then who is the actual person who is holding the camera on your wedding day? If they have some history of doing something wrong, we call it their Kundli and it is built with a video interview, seeing their real work and taking reviews from their old customers.

We also have a second file to understand that market: what one job will actually cost and there is no published price for it. What can go wrong in any sort of service? What should you know before making a booking? What is multi-day pricing? Whether a decorator takes the paint off your wall, this is written nowhere in India.

That is why a shortlist comes back in minutes with real prices on it, and why the three names are the right three.

We meet every provider before they are in. Video interview, their real work looked at properly, and calls to their last customers, where we do not just ask whether they liked the work. We ask what happened when something went wrong. 1 in 10 who apply get in, and about 1 in 5 of those has since lost it because the work dropped.

That is the same thing your cousin does when she recommends somebody. We have just done it 1,000 times and written it all down.

We have done over 1,000 bookings so far, rated 4.3 out of 5 from around 250+ reviews. Fully live in Bengaluru. Building in Delhi NCR and Mumbai.
