Ghazals and Light Classical Music Performances
Experience the soulful depth of Hindustani semi-classical music and Ghazals, delivered with the traditional warmth of a private baithak.
A rendition of a beautiful ghazal by the legendary Jagjit Singh ji. Ghazals are a cherished part of our semi-classical repertoire, blending poetry and melody to create a deeply emotional experience.
Performing a ghazal at the Ninad festival in Agra. This genre allows for a different kind of expression, focusing on the lyrical narrative and its emotional weight.
A casual, at-home rendition of a ghazal by Chhaya Ganguli. Music is not just for the stage; it is a part of our daily life and a source of personal solace.
A humble tribute to the great Manna Dey ji. We often perform compositions from legendary film music composers, honoring their contribution to India's vast musical landscape.
About Ghazals & Light Classical
For us, a ghazal is more than just melody; it is a direct conversation between the artist and the listener. When we perform in a baithak setting, we prioritize the lyrical narrative and the emotional weight of each composition, ensuring you feel the exact 'bhaav' intended by the poet. This intimate, acoustic-focused approach transforms a simple gathering into a shared, resonant journey that differs significantly from a large, amplified stage concert.
Our approach to light classical and Ghazal performances at Swarveni Gurukul is rooted in the traditional baithak format. Unlike typical stage events, our baithaks are designed for smaller spaces, allowing for an unplugged experience where the nuance of the tabla and the clarity of the vocalist shine without the need for heavy sound reinforcement.
Our Repertoire
We focus on the emotive power of Hindustani semi-classical forms. Our setlist usually flows from:
- Classical Foundations: We often begin with a short classical raga to set the mood.
- Ghazal & Nazm: We perform compositions from masters like Jagjit Singh and Manna Dey, focusing on the clarity of the Urdu and Hindi lyrics.
- Thumri & Dadra: We explore these forms to showcase the lighter, more playful, or deeply longing aspects of the ragas.
The Baithak Experience
When you book a private baithak, we bring a dedicated ensemble—typically a vocalist, a tabla player, and a harmonium player. We sit on the floor level with the audience, which removes the barrier between performer and listener. This setup is ideal for intimate gatherings, home mehfils, or corporate gatherings where you want a sophisticated, soulful atmosphere rather than high-volume entertainment. We are happy to take requests (farwaish) for popular ghazals if they fit within our repertoire, making the evening truly interactive.
Swarveni Gurukul
I am Pt. Ashish Narayan Tripathi, and my life is dedicated to the study and performance of Hindustani music. At Swarveni Gurukul, we approach every performance as a sadhana, whether it is in a small room or a concert hall. My ensemble and I ensure that the purity of the raga meets the accessibility of the ghazal, bringing a piece of our musical home to your event.
