For us, a ghazal is more than just melody; it is a direct conversation between the artist and the listener. When we perform in a baithak setting, we prioritize the lyrical narrative and the emotional weight of each composition, ensuring you feel the exact 'bhaav' intended by the poet. Our approach to light classical and Ghazal performances at Swarveni Gurukul is rooted in the traditional baithak format. Unlike typical stage events, our baithaks are designed for smaller spaces, allowing for an unplugged experience where the nuance of the tabla and the clarity of the vocalist shine without the need for heavy sound reinforcement.

Our Repertoire

We focus on the emotive power of Hindustani semi-classical forms. Our setlist usually flows from:

• Classical Foundations: We often begin with a short classical raga to set the mood.
• Ghazal & Nazm: We perform compositions from masters like Jagjit Singh and Manna Dey, focusing on the clarity of the Urdu and Hindi lyrics.
• Thumri & Dadra: We explore these forms to showcase the lighter, more playful, or deeply longing aspects of the ragas.

The Baithak Experience

When you book a private baithak, we bring a dedicated ensemble—typically a vocalist, a tabla player, and a harmonium player. We sit on the floor level with the audience, which removes the barrier between performer and listener. This setup is ideal for intimate gatherings, home mehfils, or corporate gatherings where you want a sophisticated, soulful atmosphere rather than high-volume entertainment. We are happy to take requests (farwaish) for popular ghazals if they fit within our repertoire, making the evening truly interactive.
