About Intimate Baithaks & Mehfils
When we set up a baithak, we are inviting you into a shared meditation. We prefer to sit on the floor at the same level as our audience to break the barrier between performer and listener, as this intimacy allows the nuances of the raga to travel directly. Please ensure your space is quiet enough for acoustic instruments, as we rely on the natural, unamplified purity of the tabla and tanpura to create the right atmosphere.
The essence of a mehfil lies in 'farwaish' (requests) and the connection built in that small room. Our ensemble typically consists of a lead vocalist (myself), a professional tabla player, and a harmonium accompanist. For a 90 to 120-minute performance, we curate the repertoire based on the mood of the gathering—starting with a structured classical Khayal to settle the energy, transitioning into lighter semi-classical forms like Thumri, Dadra, or Ghazals as the evening flows.
Because we believe in the sanctity of the Guru-Shishya parampara, every performance is rooted in a tradition where the artist and the audience influence each other's journey. If you are planning an intimate home gathering, a corporate cultural evening, or a private celebration, know that our setup is designed to be minimal yet acoustically complete. We do not require heavy stage lighting or elaborate sound systems. For rooms up to 400 sq. ft., we prefer to keep it unplugged. For larger spaces, we can work with a basic mic setup.
We bring the instruments, the tradition, and the bhaav. You simply bring the audience who is ready to listen with patience.
