About Urban Design & Master Planning
What Drives Us
Designing cities isn't just about blueprints for us. It feels like a slow, thoughtful process - every space is shaped by its past and the people who move through it. We listen to a site’s history, its quirks, and the stories locals tell before we try to change anything.
How We Think
- Place comes first. Every design is about the city’s memory, its natural quirks, and the way people already use it.
- We want public spaces to be truly democratic - open for everyone, not just a select few.
- History matters. Whether we’re working on a memorial or a heritage market, we look for ways to keep the memory alive in our designs.
- Nature isn’t an afterthought. Preserving trees, using rainwater, and weaving green into our plans is just how we work.
What Our Work Looks Like
- We’ve turned old jails into parks (like Freedom Park, Bengaluru), kept the scars of tragedy visible while planting hope (Bhopal Gas Tragedy Memorial), and blended new ideas into historic markets (Russell Market).
- Even big commercial spaces can become social hubs. At Byg Brewski, we dropped a huge pond right in the heart, and at Biergarten, we played with chaos to make city-watching fun.
- Our master planning style? It’s all about context-driven urban planning and sustainable landscape design. At places like Minto Hall, we let the heritage shine but give it a new role. For RBANMS School, we built around the trees, not over them.
Why It Matters
We’re not just drawing lines on a map. We’re trying to make layered, long-lasting places where people feel they belong - places that invite you to stay, think, or just breathe for a while.

My Story
We’re Mathew and Ghosh Architects—Soumitro here, with Nisha. Bengaluru’s been our home for 30 years, watching the city grow, change, get noisier, and we’re in the thick of it. We don’t hide from the chaos, we try to find beauty in it. What really gets us going is the process, the people on site, the old buildings with stories waiting to be heard. Sometimes it’s like digging for treasure, not tearing things down. Architecture, for us, is a slow, meditative journey with the city.
My Work
Architectural Design and Conservation - We design new buildings, restore heritage sites, and adapt old spaces for new uses. Adaptive reuse architecture and heritage building conservation are core to us.
Context-Driven Spaces - Every project starts with the story of its place—brewpubs under flyovers, homes in the Nilgiris, all shaped by their surroundings.
Craft and Material - We love honest materials like concrete and stone, and often create custom metalwork solutions for light and comfort.
Human-Centric Approach - Buildings should grow with people. Our spaces are made to evolve, not stay static.
Team and Collaboration - It’s never just us—our team and the craftspeople on site bring every project to life.
