About Breath, Mind & Relaxation

When you practice breathwork with me, we are not just taking deep breaths. We focus on the mechanics of the diaphragm and the engagement of the intercostal muscles to ensure you are actively shifting your nervous system from sympathetic (fight or flight) to parasympathetic (rest and digest) mode. It is a scientific process of reclaiming your calm. Whether you are dealing with chronic insomnia or high stress, we start by fixing how you breathe before we add the complexity of sound healing or restorative props.

The Science of Pranayama

Yoga is anushasan (discipline). This begins with the breath. Many students come to me breathing shallowly, usually into the upper chest. This keeps the body in a constant state of low-level stress. In our sessions, we retrain the body to use the full capacity of the lungs. We work on the rhythmic expansion and contraction of the thoracic cavity to stimulate the vagus nerve, which is the primary control center for the parasympathetic nervous system. This is the physiological basis for our stress management work.

Sound Healing & Vibrational Therapy

In our sound healing sessions, we use Tibetan bowls and gongs not for ambiance, but for frequency. These vibrations interact with the body's water content and energy meridians. When a student stands within the resonance of a large singing bowl, the goal is to clear energetic blockages that manifest as physical tension. This is particularly effective for senior citizens or those recovering from acute fatigue where traditional movement might be too strenuous.

The Role of Props in Restorative Practice

We do not just sit on a mat and close our eyes. I use Iyengar-inspired props like chairs, bolsters, and ropes to support the spine in restorative poses. For those struggling with sleep, we use specific backbending benches to open the chest cavity, allowing for deeper, unforced breathing. This is a practice of precision. By removing the need to hold yourself up, your muscles can finally let go, signaling to the brain that it is safe to switch off.
