Advanced Asana Practice with Mindful Alignment
Advanced asanas are not just physical shapes. Learn to hold your poses with awareness, stability, and proper technique, not force.
Finding stillness in the midst of powerful motion. Here, practicing Bakasana on a waterfall, I connect with the raw energy of nature. This is what our practice is about: finding your balance and strength no matter the external chaos.
On Day 4 of Navaratri, we opened the Heart Chakra with advanced backbends. This includes Laghu Vajrasana, which requires deep surrender, and Eka Pada Kapotasana, a pose of grace and power.
Sirsasana, the headstand, is the king of asanas. Here, we explore variations to challenge our balance and activate the Ajna Chakra, increasing blood flow to the brain and enhancing mental focus.

About Advanced Asana Practice
Advanced asanas are not about forcing your body into a shape; they are about opening channels for energy to flow. In my sessions, we focus on safe alignment using props before attempting complex postures like Bakasana or Sirsasana. You will learn to hold these poses with stability and awareness, not tension, so you build strength without injury—no jor, no chot.
True advancement in yoga is not about how deep you bend, but how aware you remain while doing it. Whether you are aiming for inversions like Sirsasana or complex backbends, the priority is always the safety of your joints and the rhythm of your breath. If the breath is strained, the asana loses its purpose.
My Approach to Advanced Practice
- Alignment Over Appearance: We use props to support bodies that are not yet ready for a full pose. This ensures you build the necessary muscle memory and flexibility without risking strain.
- The 'Why' Behind the Pose: Every asana has a root in mythology and energy. We explore these stories to deepen your focus—connecting the physical stretch to a mental intention.
- Integration of Pranayama: Asana is merely the preparation for the stillness of meditation. We layer breathing techniques into our practice to calm the nervous system, ensuring you leave the mat feeling energized rather than depleted.
Where We Practice
While I conduct group sessions in the city, the true immersion happens during our Rishikesh retreats. Practicing on the banks of the Ganga or near the Kunjapuri temple changes your perspective on what your body is capable of. Nature acts as a teacher, allowing you to let go of distractions and simply exist in your practice.
If you are feeling stuck in your routine, this is the time to refine your technique. We work on Hatha Yoga foundations, advanced sequencing, and the discipline required for consistent sadhana. Remember, it is thoda mehnat, solid result. Come ready to work, and you will find the strength you didn't know you possessed.
