Asanas as Stories: Mythology Meets Yoga
Every asana holds a deeper story. In these sessions, we look beyond the pose to the mythological roots—Shiva, Garuda, and more—bringing intent, focus, and Shakti to your daily practice.
Virabhadrasana, the Warrior Pose, is born from Lord Shiva's rage and grief. This asana channels the power of the divine warrior Virabhadra, teaching us to stand firm for dharma with strength and focus.
Natarajasana is the dance of Shiva, a posture of cosmic balance, creation, and destruction. In this pose, the body moves but the mind becomes still, teaching us to find stillness within motion.
Ashtavakrasana is named after the sage Ashtavakra, who was bent in eight places but possessed supreme wisdom. This arm balance teaches us that true strength lies not in the body's perfection, but in the power of consciousness and self-acceptance.
Every asana has a story. Garudasana, the Eagle Pose, teaches us about focus and devotion through the tale of Garuda, who chose service over power. In my sessions, we explore these stories to understand the deeper meaning of our practice.
About Asanas as Stories: Mythology Meets Yoga
When I teach asanas, I teach them as active meditations. We do not just align the body, we hold the intention of the mythological story behind the pose. This changes how you hold the posture. You are not just stretching, you are embodying the energy of that myth, whether it is the balance of Natarajasana or the devotion found in Garudasana.
Beyond the Posture
Yoga is not just a workout for the body. It is a Darshan—a philosophy of life. In my sessions, when I explain the story of Shiva's Tandav while guiding you into Natarajasana, the pose stops being a struggle of flexibility. It becomes a balance of creation and destruction. This is what we practice at Shakti Yoga Studio. We do not chase the perfect shape; we chase the awareness within.
Why Mythology Matters
When you root your practice in the stories of deities and sages, you give your mind a focal point. This shifts the focus from 'Can I touch my toes?' to 'What is the intent of this pose?'.
- Virabhadrasana: Born from Shiva’s rage, this pose is about standing firm for dharma. It is not just about physical strength; it is about knowing what you stand for.
- Natarajasana: The dance of Shiva, balancing cosmic creation and destruction. Here, we teach the body to move while the mind remains still.
- Garudasana: The story of the divine bird Garuda. It teaches us about focus and sacrificing personal gain for a higher purpose.
Finding Your Path
Whether you are practicing with us in Rishikesh or joining online, my goal is to help you use these asanas to manage real life. We use props to ensure that your body, regardless of its current state, can safely enter these postures. When you understand the 'why' behind the pose, the 'how' becomes much clearer. We focus on breathing, alignment, and the philosophy that keeps you grounded, even when the mind gets stuck.
