About Intimate 'Baithak' Concerts

A Baithak is a conversation between the sitar and the listener. In this format, I prefer an audience of 10 to 40 people to ensure the acoustics remain crisp and the connection feels personal. I arrive 45 minutes before we begin to tune the instrument specifically for your room’s natural acoustics, ensuring that every note of the Alaap or Jhala reaches you exactly as it should.

Traditional Baithaks rely on acoustic purity. Because I perform with a professional tabla player, the soundscape is balanced for smaller, indoor settings rather than large venues. We start with a meditative Alaap, allowing the space to settle, before moving into rhythmic compositions. This setup is perfect for anniversaries, private celebrations, or for connoisseurs who want to engage with the music without the distraction of a noisy crowd. I generally require minimal setup but look for a quiet, clutter-free area where guests can sit comfortably around the performance area to get the best audio experience. If you have specific Raags in mind, such as Yaman or Bihag, I am happy to discuss your preferences before the date to ensure the setlist matches the mood of your gathering. This is not about a stage show but about sharing the heritage of Indian classical music in a way that respects the history of the art form.

I am Dhruv Bedi, a sitar artist dedicated to the traditions of Hindustani classical music. I believe that some of the most profound musical experiences happen when we strip away the stage lights and simply sit together to listen. My goal is to make the beauty of raags accessible and deeply personal for every host and guest.
