Institutional Design: Aurinko Academy
Designing learning environments that spark curiosity through light, volume, and thoughtful spatial flow.
A short video showing the unique exterior of Aurinko Academy, with its domed, shell-like structures. Inside, a student explores the bright, open space, interacting with the learning materials on display.

A teacher and students engage in a hands-on activity on the floor of a bright, open classroom. The space is designed to be flexible, encouraging different modes of learning and interaction.
Another view of the collaborative learning environment at Aurinko Academy. The architecture, with its high, arched ceilings and ample natural light, creates an uplifting and inspiring atmosphere for both students and teachers.
A collage showing a student exploring the learning materials and a teacher conducting a class. The spaces are designed to be child-centric, with everything accessible and visually engaging.
The classrooms are filled with Montessori learning materials neatly organized on low, open shelves. The design ensures that the tools for learning are always within reach, fostering independence and exploration.
A student looks up at the unique architectural form of the ceiling. The design of the school is meant to be a learning tool in itself, sparking curiosity and imagination.
A collage showing the curved wooden staircase and the upper-level learning space. The railings are fitted with translucent panels for safety, while the open design maintains a sense of connection throughout the building.
The elegant, curved staircase with its warm wooden steps is a beautiful feature of the academy. The design is both safe for children and aesthetically pleasing, adding a sculptural element to the interior.
About Institutional Design: Aurinko Academy
The shell-like, curved structures at Aurinko Academy are designed to act as natural light collectors, pulling soft, diffused daylight deep into the classrooms to keep the energy levels balanced and calm. We avoided standard, rigid box rooms to ensure that the architecture itself remains flexible, allowing for Montessori-style, open-ended learning where the layout changes as quickly as the students' curiosity.
Architecture for learning goes beyond creating space; it involves creating a 'third teacher.' In our work for Aurinko Academy, the building was conceived as a tool for discovery. By utilizing dome-like, shell structures, we eliminated dark corners and harsh, direct sunlight, creating an interior environment that feels protective yet vast.
The 'Arivu' (Sense) Approach
Our 'Arivu' philosophy is central to institutional projects. Children interact with their environment through touch and movement, not just sight. We integrated low, open shelves for Montessori materials, ensuring everything is within a child's reach. This fosters independence, as the architecture does not impose limits on what a student can access or interact with.
Design for Flexibility
Traditional classrooms often dictate how a space should be used. At Aurinko, we stripped away fixed furniture layouts. The curved walls allow for fluid transitions, letting teachers and students rearrange the space for collaborative group work or quiet individual study. The material palette was kept neutral to let the vibrant activities of the children take center stage, while the acoustics of the curved ceilings help dampen the chaotic noise typical of school environments, resulting in a space that feels calm even when fully occupied.
Kham Design
I believe that if you want to teach a child to observe, you must first design a space that observes the light and the breeze. At Kham Design, we approach institutional work by stripping away the noise of conventional classrooms, replacing them with organic forms and open, tactile environments that encourage natural discovery.
