Smart Interior Design for Compact Homes
Limited space is an invitation to design smarter. Here is how we make small urban apartments feel open, airy, and deeply personal.
This collage shows different views of a compact bedroom at the Shekhar Patil residence. By using custom-built furniture and a light color palette, I created a space that feels both functional and serene, with dedicated zones for sleeping and working.
In this compact bedroom, I designed a multi-functional unit that combines a wardrobe, a window seat with storage, and a study desk. This custom solution makes the most of every square inch, creating a cozy and highly practical space.
This bedroom design uses warm wood tones and rattan accents to create a cozy, modern-bohemian feel. The custom wardrobe includes an integrated vanity with a mirror and shelving, a perfect example of smart, space-saving furniture design.
To maximize floor space, I designed a custom media unit that combines a TV console with a sleek, rattan-paneled wardrobe. This integrated approach keeps the room feeling uncluttered and spacious.
In the living room of the Shekhar Patil residence, I used light-colored furniture and a neutral palette to create a sense of openness. The jute curtain acts as a textured divider, adding warmth without visually closing off the space.
This view shows the open-plan living and dining area. A sleek breakfast bar connects to the kitchen, while floating shelves provide vertical storage, keeping the look light and airy.
A terracotta tile accent wall adds a splash of color and earthy texture to the living room, creating a warm focal point without overwhelming the compact space. The light-colored sofa keeps the overall feel bright.
The open layout connects the living and dining areas seamlessly. The use of consistent flooring and a light color scheme helps to unify the space and make it feel larger.
Another view of the terracotta accent wall, adorned with simple, elegant botanical prints. This shows how a single feature wall can add immense character to a room.
The breakfast bar serves as a clever transition between the kitchen and the living area. It provides a casual dining spot while keeping the kitchen partially open, maintaining a sense of connection.
About Smart Solutions for Compact Spaces
When I worked on the Shekhar Patil residence, we faced a major constraint. The kitchen design did not allow for any core cuts, which meant the sink could not go where it traditionally belongs. Instead of forcing the layout, we replaced that zone with a tall storage unit that integrated perfectly. It is these small, problem-solving adjustments that turn a cramped kitchen into a highly efficient workspace that actually feels bigger than it is.
In a compact home, every square inch matters. When I approach an apartment project, I do not just look at the floor plan. I look for the hidden possibilities. My Arivu philosophy starts with observation. I study how light travels through your living room or where you naturally need storage, and then I design custom multi-functional furniture to match those habits.
We often use custom woodwork, such as floor-to-ceiling wardrobes or window nooks with built-in storage, to keep the visual floor space clear. When the floor is clear, the room instantly feels larger. I prefer using earthy, neutral palettes, terracotta textures, or light-colored joinery to create a sense of calm rather than clutter.
For kitchens, I focus on efficiency. We often integrate tall pantry units, corner storage solutions, and breakfast bars that serve as transitions between cooking and dining areas, effectively combining two rooms into one flow. My goal is to ensure that your home solves your daily challenges rather than just looking good for guests. By mixing natural materials like wood and rattan with smart, modern joinery, we can transform a standard apartment into a space that reflects your personality and roots. Whether you are dealing with a studio or a 2BHK, the right design approach can give you back your breathing room.

I am Chetan Shivprasad. I believe that limited floor space should not restrict how a home feels. My approach is to strip away the clutter, focus on natural light, and build functional, custom pieces that solve your storage problems.
