Great design rests on execution. Here, I break down the technical work—from traditional lime plastering to precise tile setting—that gives our homes their lasting soul.

This video is a step-by-step guide to proper stone tile laying. From preparing the subfloor and laying out the pattern to grouting and sealing, every step is crucial for achieving a flawless, durable finish that will last for decades.

Pointing is the process of filling the joints between bricks to protect the wall and enhance its appearance. This video demonstrates the technique, showing how our skilled masons create clean, uniform lines that define the beauty of this exposed brick wall.

Here, we share our process for creating traditional lime plaster. This sustainable and breathable material is mixed by hand and applied in layers. The final finish is achieved by rubbing with smooth stones, a testament to age-old building crafts.

A playful and artistic take on designing a staircase, inspired by the colorful rings of Channapatna toys. This animation shows how I break down the components of a staircase, from the structure and railings to the final decorative stopper.

About The Craft of Building

Many ask why we insist on using traditional materials like lime plaster or specific brickwork techniques. It is not just about the aesthetic. These materials allow a wall to breathe, regulating humidity and temperature naturally, unlike standard cement. When we document these construction steps, it is because I want you to understand that durability in a sustainable home comes from respecting the material's nature, not just sealing it off.

Understanding the Building Process

Architecture is not merely about floor plans and renders. It is about the hands that mix the mortar, the precision of laying stone, and the patience required for traditional finishes. In my practice, I treat the construction site as an extension of the design studio.

Why Technique Matters

  • Lime Plastering: We move away from chemical-heavy cement renders. Lime plaster is breathable and antifungal. It requires a specific layering process—slaked lime, oxide, and even soap water—which we demonstrate here. It creates a finish that ages gracefully rather than cracking over time.
  • Pointing & Brickwork: The joints between bricks are not just gaps; they are the skeleton of your wall. We use careful pointing techniques to ensure the brickwork is not only structurally sound but visually consistent. This protects the wall from moisture ingress while highlighting the texture of the material.
  • Precision in Flooring: Whether it is laying Athangudi tiles or Kota stone, the subfloor preparation is everything. We use chalk lines for alignment and manage curing times strictly to prevent tiles from shifting. A 'flawless' floor is rarely about the material cost; it is about the sub-base and the application.

Integrating Local Craft

I often weave local elements, like Channapatna lacquerware, into structural components like staircases. It turns a functional element into a conversation piece. When we share these methods, it is to show that a home can be modern and functional while staying rooted in traditional craftsmanship. If you are looking for an architect who believes in site-led design and sustainable construction in Bengaluru, let us talk about the specific techniques required for your plot.

I am Chetan. At Kham Design, I do not just hand over a plan and walk away; I stay on-site to ensure the stone, brick, and plaster work matches the story we designed together. My goal is to build homes that are honest, functional, and deeply rooted in the land.
