Modern-Heritage Interiors for Gopalan Florenza Apartments
A design story of merging coastal traditions with modern living, crafted for a home that feels both nostalgic and functional.
Every design begins with a feeling. This mood board for the Gopalan Florenza apartment captures the essence of our client's dream: the warmth of wood, the earthiness of lime plaster, and the vibrant touch of Channapatna crafts, all inspired by coastal Karnataka.
The design was inspired by the client's brief for a home reflecting coastal traditions with carved wooden columns and an earthy charm. This collage shows some of the key inspirations, from Channapatna toys to traditional architectural forms.
The foyer sets the tone for the home. Here, I used durable Kotta stones for the high-traffic area and created a feature wall with art showcasing Carnatic musical instruments, immediately grounding the space in the family's cultural passions.
A view from the foyer into the living area, highlighting the transition from the red Athangudi tile flooring to the main living space. The design uses distinct zones to create a sense of discovery as you move through the apartment.
A clean, simple wooden door stands in contrast to the textured red Athangudi tile floor, creating a moment of minimalist calm. The design balances intricate traditional details with modern simplicity.
A traditional wooden pillar acts as a beautiful and functional divider between the living and dining areas. This element, inspired by ancestral homes, adds a sense of history and grandeur to the apartment's open-plan layout.
The living room design is anchored by a wooden rafter ceiling, which brings a feeling of groundedness and warmth. The wall art, featuring Carnatic musical instruments, is a personal touch that celebrates the family's love for music.
The puja room is designed as a serene sanctuary. Carved wooden columns evoke a temple mandapa, while traditional Athangudi and floral tiles add warmth and cultural heritage. The carved jali screen creates a divine, glowing light.
The master bedroom is a warm, handcrafted retreat. I used earthy tiles to add warmth underfoot, while the wardrobe doors feature a blend of glass and fabric with traditional motifs, creating a space that is both restful and elegant.
This bedroom uses a minimal palette of warm wood, soft whites, and muted blues. The custom wardrobe design adds depth and texture with a blend of wood, fabric, and a subtle pattern, creating a serene and timeless feel.
About Project: A Tale of Two Cultures - The Gopalan Florenza Apartment
When I started the Gopalan Florenza project, I avoided the common mistake of 'theming' a room. Instead, I used Athangudi tiles as a functional 'rug' to naturally zone the living space, creating a visual rhythm that guides you from the foyer into the lounge. This approach keeps the apartment feeling open, airy, and rooted, rather than cluttered.
Designing this 3BHK home for a family with deep Mangalorean roots meant moving beyond surface-level decor. My goal was to create a space that functions for a modern Bengaluru lifestyle while echoing the rhythm of coastal Karnataka. The Athangudi tiles in the living area serve a dual purpose: they add a vibrant, traditional touch and act as a natural boundary between the foyer and the seating area. I balanced these traditional elements with clean, minimal woodwork and custom joinery, ensuring the apartment doesn't feel like a museum, but a living, breathing home.
I treated the puja room as a sanctuary, using carved wooden columns to mimic a temple mandapa, creating a quiet, reflective space within the urban apartment floor plan. Throughout the other rooms, I focused on tactile comfort—warm wooden ceilings, custom wardrobes with fabric inlays, and soft lighting—to ensure every corner feels responsive to the people living there. Whether it’s the Carnatic music wall art or the child’s room designed with rounded, safe edges, every choice was made to honour the family’s narrative.
