Shashidhar Residence: A Sensory Home Design
A home is not just a structure; it is an experience. The Shashidhar Residence embodies my 'Arivu' philosophy, where raw natural stone, warm terracotta, and carefully directed light converge to create a living space that feels truly alive.
A glimpse of the Shashidhar Residence, a modern home that blends sleek lines with the raw texture of natural stone and terracotta. The design focuses on creating a dynamic facade and an interior that feels both spacious and intimate.
The play of light is a central theme in this home. This short clip shows how sunlight filters through the windows, casting beautiful shadows and bringing the textured wooden door to life, creating a sense of warmth and movement.
From the carved stone details to the striped terracotta walls, every element in the Shashidhar Residence is chosen for its sensory quality. This home is a celebration of natural materials and their ability to create a space that feels alive.
The indoor swing is a favorite feature in many homes I design. Here, it is suspended between a concrete pillar and a rugged stone wall, creating a perfect spot to relax and enjoy the view of the open-plan interior and puja area.
This cozy corner serves as a family library and reading nook. The custom-built shelves wrap around the corner, providing ample storage for books and memorabilia, while the built-in seating by the window is a perfect spot to read and relax.
A quiet moment in the family room, where built-in seating under large windows creates a comfortable and informal gathering space. The room is filled with personal touches, from family photos to collected treasures, making it truly feel like home.
Even small spaces can be filled with personality. This corner features custom floating shelves that provide a place to display cherished family photos and art, turning a simple wall into a gallery of memories.
The texture of the exposed stone wall provides a rustic and earthy backdrop to this seating area. The built-in wooden bench with storage underneath is a practical solution that maintains the room's clean, minimal aesthetic.
A close-up of the craftsmanship in the home, where a solid stone parapet meets the clean lines of the wooden staircase. This junction of materials highlights the beauty in combining rough, natural textures with polished, modern elements.
The staircase is designed with a mix of materials, including rugged stone steps that transition to a different tile flooring. This detail shows how I use flooring and material changes to define different zones within an open space.
About Project: The 'Arivu' Sensory Home - Shashidhar Residence
In this residence, we didn't just place windows for views; we engineered how the sun enters the space. By pairing a strategically placed skylight with terracotta jali screens, we allow light to filter in gently while encouraging constant cross-ventilation. This creates a soft, dynamic environment that cools the house naturally, drastically reducing the need for artificial lighting during the day.
The Shashidhar Residence is a study in what I call 'Arivu'—designing to awaken the six senses. When we approached this site, the goal was not to impose a style, but to let the materials define the experience.
The Material Dialogue
We leaned into honest, natural materials. You will notice the contrast between the rough, tactile feel of stone walls and the warmth of wooden stairs. We used terracotta, a material that breathes, for our jali screens. These are not merely decorative; they act as a thermal regulator, diffusing harsh sunlight into a warm, comfortable glow that shifts throughout the day.
Designing for Life
Every corner here serves a purpose. The library nook, with its custom-built shelves and cozy window seating, was designed to be a quiet retreat for the family. We integrated the structural elements, like the concrete pillar that anchors the indoor swing, directly into the living flow. This ensures that the architecture supports the family's daily rituals rather than hindering them.
Why This Matters
A home should adapt to your life. Whether we are using Athangudi tiles to add a touch of heritage or crafting a staircase that transitions seamlessly from stone to wood, the focus is on creating a space that feels like a natural extension of the people living inside it. We listen to the land and your story, ensuring the final result is functional, sustainable, and deeply yours.
Kham Design
I'm Chetan from Kham Design. I don't believe in fighting the site or forcing a trend; I listen to the land and the story you bring to it. My goal is to craft a space that feels like a natural extension of who you are, whether that means finding the perfect corner for a reading nook or using materials that breathe with the climate.
