About For Beginners: Your First Step

You might think you need to be flexible to start yoga, but in my classes, we use props like teak bricks, belts, and wall ropes precisely because you are not yet. These are not crutches for the weak; they are intelligent tools that place your body in the correct alignment so you can hold a pose without injury, even if you have never touched your toes. If you are stiff or scared of getting hurt, you are exactly the person who needs to be here.

Why Alignment Matters

Most people start yoga only after pain begins, often because they have spent years moving with bad posture. When you misalign your body, your energy—what I call pran shakti—simply leaks out, like water spilling from a cracked beaker. In my beginner classes, we do not focus on flow or speed. We focus on the intelligence of the pose.

The Role of Props

Iyengar Yoga is built on precision. If you cannot reach the floor, we bring the floor to you using bricks. If your shoulders are tight, we use belts to open the chest. These props allow you to stay in the asana long enough for your muscles to actually change, rather than just straining to copy a shape you aren't ready for. This is how we move from physical stiffness to understanding the 'Sukshma Sharir' (subtle body).

What You Will Learn

My curriculum is designed to move you from hesitation to confidence. You will learn:

  • The Mechanics of Stability: How to ground your feet and legs to support your spine.
  • Postural Awareness: Identifying where you hold tension and how to release it through breath and intent.
  • The Iyengar Method: Adopting the systematic approach taught by Guruji B.K.S. Iyengar.
