Iyengar Yoga for Emotional & Mental Wellness
Your body is the map of your mind. If you are holding tension, you are holding onto the past. My Iyengar method uses precise alignment and breathwork to clear emotional blockages and restore your balance.
Your body is a direct reflection of your mental state. Emotional blockages manifest as physical ailments like backaches, asthma, or anxiety. Yoga is the one tool in your hands that can destroy the root of this problem. I am here to hold your hand and guide you across this river.
Emotion and mind play a major role in your chakras, and your body reflects that. Years of emotional turmoil will boil your gut out. The tool we have is opening different areas through practice. This is why backbends bring so much relief. If you are ready for a profound change without medicine, join us.
To work on your chakras, you must prepare the body for pranayama. If your structure is not straight, the flow of *pran shakti* is uneven. Using a simple rod, as shown here, is Guruji's genius. It passively forces the chest to open, creating the optimum lift for balanced breathing and awareness.
The most important thing for a teacher is to make the student feel. We are often dull in the armpit area, which leads to a drooping posture. By using the breath to lift the side ribs, as we do in pranayama preparation, we awaken this area and create space.
This is a pranayama preparation using Jalandhar Bandha (chin lock). Dropping the chin to the chest is essential for the sublimation of the mind. I teach my students to do this with mindful inhalation and exhalation, lifting the armpit chest to bring awareness without creating tension.
Courage is not the absence of fear; it is moving with it. The body remembers trauma and doubt. Here, a student uses the rope wall to work on a split, a pose that requires both flexibility and mental fortitude. We move through the fear with breath and intention.
Yoga does not make you fearless. It shows you your courage. These students are practicing standing poses using blocks for stability. This support allows them to find their inner strength and stand tall, both physically and mentally.
That spot in your solar plexus holds your fear, but it also holds your fire. That is your Manipura chakra, the center of power. Here, a student works on a deep backbend with assistance, a powerful way to stimulate this chakra and transform fear into courage.
This image captures the essence of our practice. Students are engaged in various poses, some looking inward, some receiving adjustments. It shows that the journey to emotional wellness is personal but supported by the group's collective energy.
Yoga does not just stretch the body. It softens the armor we build around our hearts. As women, we carry so much. This practice of opening the chest in poses like Warrior I (Virabhadrasana I) allows us to breathe into that space and heal.
About Emotional & Mental Wellness
Emotional turmoil doesn't just sit in your head; it settles in your tissues as stiffness, restricted breath, or chronic aches. When we work on specific Iyengar sequences like backbends or restorative chest openers, we aren't just stretching muscles. We are physically unlocking the armour you have built around your heart. This is not relaxation yoga; it is a precise, scientific process of moving energy out of your body so your mind can finally stop racing.
Many students come to me thinking they need 'gentle' yoga for stress. They are often surprised when I hand them a belt or a block. Emotional healing requires structure, not just a soft mat. In my Mandi House studio, we use the Iyengar system to create that structure.
The Scientific Approach to Release
When your body is misaligned, your life force, or Pran Shakti, spills out like water from a broken beaker. This isn't metaphorical; it is a physiological reality. Chronic anxiety manifests as a collapsed chest or a rigid spine. By correcting your physical alignment, we force a shift in your nervous system. We do not just 'relax' you; we structurally correct your posture to allow the breath to reach those stagnant areas of your body where you have been holding fear or grief.
Why Props Are Essential
Belts, ropes, and chairs are not crutches for the weak. They are intelligent tools designed to help you access the Manipura chakra—the solar plexus—where fear and your inner 'fire' reside. Whether you are a beginner in Delhi or joining a live session via Zoom, my classes focus on these specific adjustments. We use the wall ropes to decompress the spine and open the shoulders, areas that lock up when you have been under immense pressure.
Your Commitment, My Guidance
Yoga is a journey of self-study, or Svadhyaya. You cannot fix emotional blockages by avoiding them. You must look at them, move through them, and breathe into them. I do not hide behind corporate, sugar-coated words. I will tell you where you are collapsing, where you are weak, and where you are hiding. If you are ready to stop masking your symptoms and start removing the root cause, bring your commitment to the mat. I will guide the rest.
