Kathak Classes for Kids in Mumbai

I approach teaching Kathak to children by making Abhinaya (expressions) the central bridge to their movement. Instead of starting with strict technical drill, we explore the stories behind the dance, which helps children naturally internalize the complex hand gestures and footwork that define the Jaipur Gharana style.

Learning classical dance requires a balance between patience and engagement. In my studio, we do not treat children as miniature adults. The curriculum is specifically adapted to keep young dancers interested while maintaining the integrity of our tradition.

We start with the basics of Tatkaar (footwork) and Chakkars (spins), but these are taught as games of rhythm. By breaking down the math of Layakari into simple counting exercises, children gain a sense of musicality that stays with them.
