The Heartbeat of Kathak: Footwork and Spins
Master the foundation of Jaipur Gharana Kathak. Build precision in your Tatkaar and grace in your Chakkars through structured, expert-led guidance.
The sound of ghungroos is like an ocean singing relentlessly. This is a moment of riyaaz, focusing on the flow and grace of movement, culminating in a classic Jaipur Gharana chakkar (spin).
A fun, impromptu dance to an iconic Bollywood song that uses Kathak bols. This shows how the fundamentals of Kathak, like footwork and spins, are part of a wider cultural fabric.
A must-try footwork exercise series. This video breaks down the mathematics of a complex Tatkaar pattern, showing how we combine different rhythmic fractions within a single cycle.
Five things I wish to tell all serious students of Kathak. This video, set to the backdrop of Tatkaar, shares important insights about discipline, the student-teacher relationship, and respecting the art form.
Just a girl trying out her Ghagra for a pre-riyaaz warmup. The flair of the ghagra adds another dimension to the chakkars, making the spins visually spectacular.
Which of these five paltas (variations) of Ektaal is your favorite? I created these footwork combinations to introduce my students to different rhythmic patterns using Takita-dhikita and TaThaiThaiTa.
A soft aesthetic with a tricky tihai in Ektaal. Sometimes, all you need is the serene sound of a sitar nagma and your ghungroos to create something beautiful.
Exploring different ways of expressing the same bol (rhythmic syllable) through footwork. Every bol can be treated like a mantra, with layers of meaning and expression in its execution.
A student asked for a tihai that has all the Jaatis (rhythmic families) in it. Challenge accepted. This footwork piece demonstrates the mathematical complexity and versatility of Kathak rhythms.
If you love the song Sapphire, you have to try this spins challenge. A fun fusion piece where I combine the energy of contemporary music with the traditional chakkars of Kathak.
About The Heartbeat of Kathak: Footwork & Spins
You see the rhythmic precision in my videos, but the real secret to clear Tatkaar lies in how you place your weight. In my classes, we start by training the arches of your feet to handle the impact before we even touch the ghungroos. It is about building a foundation that makes your spins stable and your footwork sound sharp from day one.
Kathak is often misunderstood as merely a collection of spins and movements, but its soul lies in the mathematics of rhythm, or Layakari. Whether you are learning online via Zoom or at my Vile Parle studio, the approach remains the same: we focus on the relationship between your body, the floor, and the beat.
Why Technique Defines Your Journey
Learning proper Tatkaar (footwork) is not just about making sound. It is about alignment. A heavy or flat-footed landing can lead to injury and creates a dull sound. We dedicate time to training your feet to land with clarity, ensuring each bol—or rhythmic syllable—rings true. This is the foundation of the Jaipur Gharana style I teach.
What We Cover
- Tatkaar Fundamentals: Proper weight distribution and posture for sharp, clear sound.
- Jaipur Gharana Chakkars: Techniques for spotting and core engagement to achieve graceful, stable spins.
- The Art of Padhant: You cannot dance what you cannot recite. We practice Padhant so you understand the rhythmic cycle (Taal) deeply before attempting complex movements.
- Mathematical Precision: We move beyond basic steps into complex rhythmic play, training your ears to catch beats before they run away.
My classes are kept to small batches of 10 to 15 students, which allows me to provide real-time verbal corrections. Whether you are a total beginner or an advanced student looking to refine your footwork patterns, the goal is the same: to find your own groove while respecting the traditional discipline of our lineage.
Eshani Sathe
I grew up with the sounds of ghungroos as my lullaby, carrying forward my mother and Guru Radhika Sathe's Jaipur Gharana legacy. My classes are not just about steps; they are about helping you find your own rhythm, whether you are taking your first step or perfecting your spins.
