Movement and Expression Classes in Bengaluru
We move beyond the mat to explore the language of the body. Through contemporary dance and expressive movement, we help children and adults find confidence, flow, and joy.
I was happy to host contemporary dance professional Sonia for a workshop at our shala. Her session focused on inviting movement, play, and flow into the lives of children.
Children exploring their bodies through contemporary dance. This workshop with Sonia was a wonderful way for them to express themselves, build confidence, and experience the joy of fluid movement.
I wasn't planning to practice in a Kurta Pajama, but it happened. It reminded me that yoga is not about the clothes we wear, but the authenticity and intention we bring to the mat, just as we encourage free expression in our movement workshops.
About Movement and Expression
When we invite professionals like Sonia to conduct contemporary dance workshops at our shala, it is not just for technique. We focus on giving children a dedicated space to explore play, fluidity, and creative expression in a way that complements their foundational yoga practice.
Beyond the structured discipline of Ashtanga, our movement and expression sessions act as a necessary release. Whether it is the fluid, expressive motions of contemporary dance or the disciplined power of Kalaripayattu, these forms allow children to move without the pressure of performing perfectly. We have seen how blending these with mindful art or simple breathwork helps children navigate their emotions more effectively. It is about teaching them to trust their bodies and their own rhythm.
During our sessions in JP Nagar, we often observe children who usually struggle with stillness find their focus through active, rhythmic movement. These workshops are open to all levels, as our goal is always to provide a safe space for growth rather than a platform for competition. We integrate these sessions to build confidence, allowing every child to find their own way to balance and joy.

Our shala is a home for everyone to explore, not a studio for performance. We focus on bringing in diverse movement forms like contemporary dance and martial arts because they offer our children a different way to understand their own strength, rhythm, and capacity for joy.
