Our Approach to Kalaripayattu and Movement
At Svadhyaya, we view Kalaripayattu not as a series of rigid drills, but as a path to body awareness and self-discovery. Here is a glimpse into the rooftop space where we cultivate this traditional movement practice.
A glimpse into our dedicated movement space in Jayanagar, Bangalore. We built this area to be a safe and inspiring environment for practices like Kalaripayattu, where you can connect with your body and explore your potential.
This is the core of our teaching philosophy. In our Kalaripayattu classes, we focus on the process of learning and the joy of movement, rather than just the end result. It is a journey of self-discovery.
Kalaripayattu is one of the foundational movement arts we offer at Svadhyaya. We believe in a holistic approach, where this traditional martial art complements other practices like yoga and bouldering for complete well being.
We see movement as a powerful tool for learning and creative expression. Our Kalaripayattu sessions are designed not just to teach techniques, but to help you develop focus, discipline, and a deeper connection with yourself.
About Featured
We practice on a rooftop terrace in Jayanagar 4th T Block, using studio mats rather than traditional mud pits to keep our training accessible for urban schedules. Our sessions focus on the Northern Style of Kalaripayattu, prioritizing consistent, mindful movement and functional fitness over the pressure to achieve immediate perfection.
Our approach to Kalaripayattu is rooted in the belief that movement should be a joyful, lifelong practice. While we honor the traditional Northern Style, including fundamental Meythari sequences and Chuvadu steps, we adapt the delivery to fit a modern lifestyle.
The Learning Environment
Our rooftop studio in Jayanagar provides a naturally ventilated, open-air setting that connects the practice to the outdoors. By limiting our batches to 8 to 12 students, we ensure that every participant receives direct feedback from our facilitators. Whether you are eight or thirty-eight, the focus remains on personal progression rather than competing with others in the room.
Why We Train This Way
Training is rarely a straight line. You will likely feel sore, awkward, or frustrated in your early sessions, and that is exactly where the learning happens. We provide the structure through guided 60-minute sessions—three times a week—but the outcome depends on your willingness to show up and stay curious. We encourage you to move past the desire for quick results and instead find the rhythm in your own body.
Progression
We offer options ranging from a monthly subscription for those testing the waters to a quarterly immersion for students ready to advance into Kolthari and more complex weaponry techniques. Our space is not just for martial arts; it is a community hub where Kalaripayattu sits alongside bouldering, pottery, and other arts, all sharing the same philosophy of growth through exploration.
