Therapeutic Aerial Yoga for Back Pain Relief
Gentle suspension to decompress your spine and melt away stiffness, without any circus tricks.
I often hold specialized workshops focusing on back and spine health. This poster highlights how we combine floor and aerial yoga to achieve major spinal decompression and realignment. It's a targeted approach for anyone seeking relief from back pain.
Inversions using the aerial hammock are one of the most effective ways to create space between the vertebrae, offering incredible relief for the spine. Here you can see how the hammock supports the body, allowing for gentle traction and decompression that helps improve posture and ease discomfort.
This video shows students working on a supported version of One-Legged King Pigeon pose using the hammock. The silk allows the back leg to relax, making this deep hip opener and backbend more accessible and therapeutic. It's a perfect example of how we use props to work with the body, not against it.
About Therapeutic Aerial Yoga for Pain Relief
Most people assume aerial yoga is only for acrobats, but at Anahata, I use the hammock as a supportive tool for spinal traction. In our private sessions, we work with low-hanging silks to gently elongate the spine and create space between vertebrae, which is often the missing piece for chronic back pain relief. You don't need to be bendy or fit; you just need to be willing to let the hammock do the heavy lifting for your stiff back.
My approach to aerial yoga, rooted in the Unnata style, is designed for healing, not performance. When you are dealing with chronic pain, the last thing your body needs is high-impact movement. That is why I focus on restorative floor-based techniques combined with the decompression benefits of the aerial hammock.
How the Hammock Helps
The hammock acts like a third hand, supporting your weight so you can access deep stretches that would be impossible—or painful—on a flat mat. By using gravity to our advantage, we gently traction the spine. This creates space between your vertebrae, relieving pressure on discs and helping to ease the stiffness that comes from sitting at a desk or dealing with long-term back issues.
The Healing Process
Every therapeutic session begins with a diagnostic check. We aren't just doing poses; we are looking at your koshas (the five layers of being). During our 75-minute sessions, we might use:
- Pranayama: Specific breathing to help regulate your nervous system and reduce cortisol levels.
- Restorative Asanas: Using props to ensure your body is fully supported while we work on mobility.
- Guided Relaxation: Closing the session with Yoga Nidra to ensure your mind feels as light as your body.
Whether you are managing hypertension, hormonal shifts, or simple everyday back pain, we will create a path that feels safe for you. This is a sanctuary in the heart of Gurgaon where you can come exactly as you are—stiff back and all—to find relief, breathe, and let go.
