About The Practice of Stillness: Yin & Restorative Yoga
In these sessions, we focus on using props like bolsters, blocks, and straps to create a fully supported environment. By holding these poses for several minutes, we help your joints and connective tissues release tension that active exercise often misses, allowing for a deep, quiet restoration.
Yin and Restorative yoga offer a necessary counterpoint to the busy, active pace of modern life. In my Mysore shala, we shift the focus away from muscular effort and toward a passive, meditative state. This practice is not about intensity or perfect alignment, but about giving your body the permission to settle and receive.
Why This Practice Matters
Most of our daily movement engages the muscles, but the deep tissues—the fascia and joints—often hold onto long-term stress. When we hold a posture for three to five minutes, we bypass the larger muscle groups and target these deeper areas. This allows for a release of physical tightness and provides a space for the nervous system to shift from a state of 'fight or flight' into one of 'rest and digest.'
What to Expect
Whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced practitioner, you are welcome here. We use bolsters to support the spine, blocks to ground the hands, and blankets for warmth. My guidance focuses on helping you find your individual 'edge'—the point where you feel a gentle stretch without pain—and then staying there with breath and patience.
We practice this in a quiet, dedicated space in Gokulam, Mysore, where the atmosphere is conducive to internal work. If you are struggling with chronic stress, stiffness, or simply need to cultivate a deeper sense of mindfulness, these sessions provide the tools you need to support your body and mind over the long term.
