Aerial Yoga: Building Strength and Finding Flow
Aerial yoga is where I mix playfulness with deep, functional strength. Hanging in a hammock helps me explore movement in a way that feels freeing, supported, and balanced.
A quiet moment from my home practice. Exploring a gentle inversion sequence helps me reset my body and mind, and my furry friend seems to enjoy the calm energy too.
About My Aerial Journey
If you are worried about whether your core is strong enough, let go of that thought. The aerial hammock acts as a support system, allowing you to ease into poses you would not dream of attempting on the floor. My main tip for your first time is simply to wear form-fitting, zipper-free clothing so you do not snag the fabric, and come ready to breathe through the initial wobbly moments.
While the poses look graceful, the real magic of aerial yoga is how it helps your body realign. By using the hammock to take the pressure off your joints, you can safely explore deep inversions that provide spinal decompression, which is often difficult to achieve with standard floor exercises.
Why Aerial Yoga Works
For those of us who sit at desks all week, hanging upside down can be a game-changer. It improves circulation and relieves the constant load on your spine. In my Saturday batches in Santacruz West, we focus on a flow that moves from standing poses to gentle inversions and ends with a 'floating Savasana'—essentially resting while hovering a few inches off the ground.
What to Expect in Class
We keep our batches small, with only 8 to 10 students. This allows me to provide hands-on spotting, especially when you are entering or exiting an inversion for the first time. You do not need to be flexible or have a gymnastics background to join; the hammock is there to meet you exactly where you are today.
For the Little Yogis
I also host aerial sessions for kids aged 6 to 12. In these classes, we trade the intense focus for sensory integration, using the hammocks for swinging mechanics and movement games. It is a wonderful way for children to build balance and focus without it ever feeling like a chore.
