Our Ashtanga Yoga Lineage and Tradition
Yoga at The Shala is rooted in the traditional Ashtanga method taught by Paramaguru Sharath Jois. We honor this lineage by sharing the practice with respect, depth, and unwavering consistency.
On Guru Poornima, we honor our teacher, Paramaguru Sharath Jois. A guru is one who dispels the darkness of ignorance. We are forever grateful for the light he shares on this path.
A moment of gratitude with my Guru. His guidance is the foundation of my practice and teaching, and it is an honor to study with him and share the Ashtanga yoga method.
Our Guru, Sharath Jois, giving adjustments during a workshop. His deep knowledge and precise guidance are a cornerstone of the Ashtanga tradition, which we strive to uphold in our shala.
Learning from the source. Observing our Guru at work is a profound lesson in dedication, humility, and the power of the practice. We are grateful to carry this lineage forward.
About Our Lineage & Gratitude
We follow the traditional Mysore style of Ashtanga yoga, where you learn the sequence at your own pace with personal guidance from our teachers. This ensures that whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced practitioner, your alignment and breath remain safe, effective, and tailored specifically to your needs.
In a world of quick fixes and generic fitness, we choose the path of traditional Ashtanga. Our lineage is directly linked to Paramaguru Sharath Jois, and we maintain the integrity of this method at our studio in Greater Kailash, Delhi. We believe the practice is a conversation between your breath and your body, not just a series of shapes to master.
Why does lineage matter? It provides a framework that has been refined over generations. When you step onto the mat at The Shala, you are not just exercising. You are participating in a historical practice that encourages discipline, patience, and self-observation.
Our approach is simple. We teach the method as it was passed to us, with deep respect for the tradition. This means no loud music or ego-driven performance. We focus on:
- Mysore Style: Where you practice independently, and the teacher moves around to offer individual adjustments. This is the heart of the Ashtanga tradition.
- Led Classes: Where we move together, focusing on the synchronization of breath and movement.
- Breath and Bandhas: The subtle internal work that transforms a physical workout into a meditative practice.
We welcome anyone who is ready to show up, regardless of experience. You do not need to be flexible to start yoga; you just need to be willing to breathe. If you are looking for a space in Delhi where you can explore your potential without judgment, our door is open.
