Iyengar Yoga Lineage: Understanding the Guru Parampara
Iyengar Yoga is not merely a physical exercise, but a precise transmission of knowledge. Explore the traditional lineage that shapes every sequence, adjustment, and philosophical insight in my practice.
A quote from my Guruji, B.K.S. Iyengar, on the experience of practice in later life. He explains how the practice evolves from stretching the body to stretching the intelligence within the body, a subtle and sublime process.
A photo of my gurus, B.K.S. Iyengar with his children, Geeta and Prashant Iyengar, on Guru Purnima. Their teachings on the importance of the guru-shishya parampara, or the lineage from teacher to pupil, are the source of my practice.
Guruji B.K.S. Iyengar adjusting students. His teaching clarifies that yoga is not a religion but a practice that makes a human being a better human being, uniting the body with the mind and drawing aside the veils of illusion.
My Guruji, B.K.S. Iyengar, in a seated twist. His life was a testament to how the practice of yoga, by the grace of God, can light the lamp of the inner core, allowing one to see the same light of the soul in all beings.
A portrait of Geetaji Iyengar, whose wisdom continues to guide my practice. Her father, B.K.S. Iyengar, taught to "Live before you die so that the death is also a lively celebration," a philosophy she embodied.
A cherished photo of Guruji B.K.S. Iyengar on his birthday, adjusting a student. He transformed static yoga into a dynamic, living art, and it is my life's work to carry that legacy forward.
A photo of Geetaji Iyengar teaching Sarvangasana. Her journey broke barriers for women in yoga, and she carried the immense responsibility of her lineage with incredible strength, grace, and care, opening the path for so many.
The Bellur Iyengar Yoga Center, a shrine dedicated to B.K.S. Iyengar. This is my Mecca, a sanctum where one immerses the body and mind in his teachings and philosophy, and where surrender comes naturally.
About Our Lineage: The Guru Parampara
In this lineage, or parampara, every adjustment is a direct transmission of the methodology established by B.K.S. Iyengar. When you join my sessions, you are not following a personal interpretation of yoga, but the rigorous, standardized system practiced at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute. This ensures that every prop configuration and verbal cue you receive—whether in my Delhi studio or online—remains anchored in the same precise tradition designed to align the physical body with the intelligence of the mind.
A Tradition of Precision
My practice is built upon the foundational texts and teachings of Guruji B.K.S. Iyengar, specifically the insights found in Astadala Yogamala. Iyengar Yoga is unique because it treats the practice as an adjustive science rather than a static routine. The lineage is maintained through the specific use of props—belts, blocks, chairs, and rope walls—which act as instruments of accuracy. These tools allow students of all ages and flexibility levels to access the therapeutic benefits of asanas without risking strain.
Why the Lineage Matters
In modern yoga, it is easy for the essence of the practice to be diluted. The guru-shishya parampara serves as a safeguard against this dilution. By studying in this tradition, you learn that yoga is a process of purification. We do not just perform poses; we study them to understand the internal connections between the nervous system, musculoskeletal alignment, and the intellect. This approach requires regularity and discipline. Whether we are practicing standing poses to build strength or restorative inversions to calm the nervous system, the intent is always to clear the veils of illusion and allow the practitioner to experience the deeper layers of the self.
Integration into Daily Practice
Whether you are seeking relief from chronic back pain or looking to deepen your understanding of the yoga philosophy, the methodology remains the same. I guide students through progressive sequences where the body acts as a laboratory for the mind. This is not a place for shortcuts. We work with the body as it is, using the intelligence of the lineage to guide you toward a more balanced, aligned state of being.
