Our Guiding Philosophy at The Shala Delhi
Yoga at The Shala is not about achieving the perfect pose. It is about showing up, breathing, and finding a little more steadiness in a city that rarely slows down.
Readiness is overrated. The real magic happens when you just begin, even if you're unsure or awkward. This is the story of how The Shala was built on the courage to start imperfectly.
Get to know our founder, Sonakshi, in this quick Q&A. She shares what yoga means to her, the myth she wants to bust, and her advice for any new yogi: just find a teacher you like and do the practice.
A moving meditation on being present. This practice is a reminder to let go of what you can't control, take a deep breath, and accept everything for what it is. The now is all you have.
This is a reminder that yoga isn't a sport. It's for every single human, a series of practices like pranayama and meditation designed to help you experience complete mental steadiness.
Your yoga practice is not measured in headstands. It's measured in how you laugh at yourself and try again when you fall. We celebrate progress, not perfection.
A gentle reminder: the pose you avoid the most is often the one you need the most. We encourage you to lean into challenges, as they are our greatest teachers.
About Our Guiding Philosophy
The environment here is intentional and free from the competitive atmosphere found in many studios. Whether you are stepping onto the mat for a private celebration or a daily group class, the focus remains on your personal process rather than aesthetic perfection.
We view yoga as a journey of self-discovery, not a performance. Our approach is deeply rooted in the traditional Ashtanga lineage of Paramaguru Sharath Jois, emphasizing breath, discipline, and respect for the ancient practice. However, we believe this tradition is for everyone, regardless of their current flexibility or fitness level.
It Is Not A Sport
We often hear new students worry about their inability to perform advanced poses. We want to remove that pressure immediately. Yoga is a series of internal practices including pranayama (breath control) and dhyana (meditation) designed to cultivate mental steadiness. You do not need to be strong or flexible to start; you only need the desire to learn.
Authentic Lineage, Modern Application
While our teaching honors the rigor of traditional Ashtanga, we adapt our classes to support the modern, busy lifestyle of our students in Delhi. We recognize that daily life brings stress and that the practice can feel uncomfortable or emotional at times. We encourage you to lean into that discomfort rather than avoid it, as it is often where the most significant personal breakthroughs occur.
Why The Shala Feels Different
Our community is built on honesty. We do not sugar-coat the practice. We celebrate the moments you fall, laugh at yourself, and try again. Whether you are attending a Sound Healing workshop to release stored tension, joining a Women's Circle for connection, or building a foundation in our daily Mysore-style classes, our space is designed to be your sanctuary. We invite you to drop the mask, be messy, and simply breathe.
The Shala
I started The Shala as a leap into the unknown, just a space to be real. We aren't here to perfect your backbend, but to help you find some ground in a city that never slows down.
