The Stories and Philosophy of Yoga: Beyond the Mat

Yoga is often seen as a series of physical shapes, but the real practice happens in the mind. I love breaking down the ancient stories and symbolism behind our poses to help you find stability, clarity, and a deeper connection to yourself—both on and off the mat.

In this Extended Side Angle Pose, my body creates a long line of energy from my back foot to my fingertips. This pose reflects the active, engaged nature of Karma Yoga, the path of selfless action. I believe in studying texts like the Bhagavad Gita to understand how our actions create our future.

This is Parivrtta Surya Yantrasana, or Compass Pose, a deep hip opener and twist. The focus required for this pose connects to the principles of Jnana Yoga, the path of wisdom. This path involves dedicated study of yogic scriptures to develop the intellect and understand our true nature.

Here I am in Natarajasana, or King Dancer Pose, against a beautiful sunset. This challenging balance pose is more than a physical feat. It embodies the dance of Shiva and teaches us to find stability and grace even when life feels unsteady. It's a practice of releasing fear and embracing change.

Practicing Vasisthasana, or Side Plank, on my balcony surrounded by plants. This arm balancing pose is named after the sage Vasistha and requires focus and strength. The story behind the pose teaches us about gaining new perspectives and finding clarity when our vision is clouded.

In Bhujangasana, or Cobra Pose, I lift my chest, opening the heart. This pose is part of the Sun Salutation sequence. The practice of 108 Sun Salutations is deeply symbolic, and I enjoy exploring the sacred meaning behind the number 108 in Vedic culture, connecting our practice to the sun, moon, and earth.
