Yoga & Mythology: Connecting Asanas to Ancient Stories

Yoga is far more than physical exercise; it is a sacred discipline. Through these stories, I share the mythological origins of each asana, helping you connect your practice to the timeless wisdom of our traditions.

Simhasana, the Lion Pose, is dedicated to Narasimha, the man-lion incarnation of Lord Vishnu. This powerful pose, which involves a forceful exhale and roar, helps release tension and embodies the fierce courage of the deity.

In a posture of reverence before a sacred Shiva Lingam, I connect with the origins of yoga. My workshops are steeped in this ancient tradition, viewing yoga not just as exercise, but as a profound spiritual discipline or 'sadhana' for harmonizing body, mind, and spirit.

This is Trivikramasana, a challenging standing pose that honors Lord Vishnu's incarnation as Vamana. Each asana I teach carries a story, and understanding these mythological roots adds a deeper layer of meaning and purpose to our physical practice.

Anantasana is named after Ananta, the celestial serpent upon whom Lord Vishnu rests. This reclining pose teaches us to find relaxation and stability simultaneously, reflecting the cosmic balance maintained by Vishnu.

Virabhadrasana III, or Warrior III, is named after the fierce warrior Virabhadra, an incarnation of Shiva. This pose cultivates the harmony, balance, and power of a righteous warrior, improving posture and building agility in body and mind.

About this collection

When you practice with me, we do not just hold poses; we explore the Sthala (place) and Katha (story) behind them. For instance, in Anantasana (Vishnu’s Couch Pose), I teach you how to use a simple strap or belt to maintain stability if your reach is limited, allowing you to focus on the breathing rhythm rather than just the physical stretch. This approach bridges the gap between ancient philosophy and your daily physical capacity.

Understanding the Asana through Story

In my sessions, I often use the Puranas and Vedas as our guide. When we perform Simhasana (the Lion Pose), it is not just about the roar or the tongue stretch; it is about invoking the fierce courage of Narasimha, the man-lion incarnation of Lord Vishnu. By understanding the Katha (story) of Hiranya Kasipu and Prahlada, you bring a different intention to your practice—one that transforms a simple exercise into a moment of mental fortitude.

Why Mythology Matters in Practice

Many modern practitioners feel disconnected from their bodies because they treat yoga as a mechanical act. My role is to bridge this gap. Whether it is Trivikramasana, which reminds us of the limitations of ego, or Virabhadrasana, which cultivates the grace and poise of a righteous warrior, these stories provide a context that turns a workout into a meaningful ritual.

Practical Application

You do not need to be a scholar to begin. My workshops, whether conducted online via Zoom or offline at your location in Ahmedabad, are designed to make these concepts accessible.

  • Personalization: I use props like chairs and belts to ensure every practitioner, regardless of mobility, can experience the pose correctly.
  • Holistic Integration: Every session includes Pranayama (breathwork) and Yoga Nidra (guided meditation) to ground the physical work in mental stillness.
  • Structure: We break down complex movements, explaining the anatomy alongside the spiritual significance.

Whether you join a small group masterclass or a personal session, you will leave with a deeper understanding of why you are moving your body in a particular way. Yoga is a science, and these stories are the keys to unlocking its full potential for your body, mind, and spirit.
