Professional Tabla Accompaniment for Vocalists
Sangat is not just about keeping time; it is about creating a musical conversation. Whether you are performing khayal, thumri, or a devotional bhajan, my role is to listen and respond to the singer's emotions.

About The Art of Sangat: Vocal Accompaniment
For me, 'sangat' is a dialogue, not just accompaniment. I prioritize a dedicated rehearsal session before the actual performance to synchronize with the vocalist's unique style and emotional range. This preparation allows me to react instinctively on stage, whether I am supporting a delicate thumri or a complex khayal, ensuring the tabla elevates the singer's expression rather than overshadowing it.
My Approach to Sangat
When I accompany a vocalist, my primary goal is to be an extension of their musical thought. I come from the Purab Gharana, which emphasizes depth, resonance, and a specific balance between the 'dayan' and 'bayan'. This stylistic background allows me to provide dynamic support that adapts to the vocalist’s specific needs.
What You Can Expect
- Pre-Performance Sync: I include a 2-hour rehearsal session in my accompaniment packages. We use this time to align on scales, tempos, and the emotional arch of your compositions.
- Technical Precision: I pay close attention to sound checks, ensuring the tabla is tuned perfectly to your vocal pitch. I work directly with the sound engineers to make sure the percussion cuts through without drowning out the lyrics.
- Versatility: My experience spans across genres, including Khayal, Thumri, Natyasangeet, and devotional music. I understand the distinct rhythmic requirements for each, whether it is the steady pulse required for a bandish or the nuanced laggis for a semi-classical piece.
Why Consistency Matters
Music is about trust. When you know your tabla player understands when to provide a subtle base and when to take the lead with a tihai, you can perform with more freedom. I treat every stage—be it a small house baithak or a concert auditorium—with the same dedication and focus.
Tejovrush Joshi
I’m Tejovrush. My approach to vocal accompaniment is simple: I listen first. Growing up in a musical home and learning from established gurus, I’ve realized that the real magic in 'sangat' happens when you stop playing at a singer and start playing with them.
