About Ghazal & Vocal Mehfils
Good accompaniment is all about listening. I do not just play the tabla; I follow the vocalist’s breath and the lyrics, knowing exactly when to stay quiet and when to fill the space with a delicate 'laggi'. My role is to lift the singer’s performance, ensuring the rhythm enhances the emotion of the ghazal rather than distracting from it.
The Art of Sangat
In my years of performing, I have learned that the tabla is a dialogue. Whether we are sitting in a formal auditorium or a cozy house baithak, the goal is always the same: to create a foundation that allows the vocalist to express themselves freely. I approach every vocal concert with a focus on 'sangat' (accompaniment), where the beat serves the song.
My Approach to Performance
I specialize in Hindustani classical and semi-classical forms, including ghazals, thumris, and khayals. My training in the Delhi and Farukhabad gharanas gives me a repertoire that is both subtle and dynamic.
- Pre-Performance: I always arrive 45 to 60 minutes early to ensure the tabla is perfectly tuned to the vocalist's scale and to acclimate the instruments to the venue's temperature.
- Sound Check: I am experienced with both traditional mic setups and contact microphones, ensuring the percussion is balanced against the singer's voice and the harmonium.
- Adaptability: Every singer has a different style. Some prefer a steady, unobtrusive beat, while others enjoy a more interactive, playful rhythm. I make it a point to discuss the flow of the setlist beforehand so we are on the same page.
Why Book Me?
- AIR Graded Artist: Recognised for technical proficiency and stage experience.
- Versatility: Comfortable in everything from quiet, intimate mehfils to high-energy fusion sets.
- Professionalism: I bring my own performance cushions (gaddi) and stability rings, so you do not need to worry about the setup.
I am based in Delhi NCR and am happy to travel for performances. If you are organizing a vocal music event, I would be honoured to contribute the rhythm.
Divyanshu Kumar
I believe the tabla is meant to support, not dominate. Whether it's a ghazal mehfil or a classical baithak, my focus is always on the vocalist’s expression and the mood of the raag. Everything I do comes from the blessings of my gurus.
