About Jugalbandi: Rhythmic Dialogues
When I perform a jugalbandi, I do not just follow a set score. I listen for the tehai or the melodic cue from the other artist, whether they are playing Pakhawaj, Mridangam, or violin, and respond in real-time. This dialogue requires deep focus and trust, so I always make sure to have at least one rehearsal before we step on stage to align our rhythms properly.
Jugalbandi is where two minds meet. It is my favorite format because it demands total presence. My approach to these rhythmic dialogues is built on the concept of sangat, which is the art of listening. Whether I am sharing the stage with a Pakhawaj player at a festival or engaging in a Hindustani-Carnatic Jugalbandi with a Mridangam artist, the process is the same. We find a common taal, set a baseline, and then the conversation begins.
I have performed duets across venues like the National Rhythm Festival in Kerala and city stages in Mumbai. These shows are not just about speed, though the drut laya can get intense. It is about how we pass the baton. I might play a complex tihai that resolves on the sam, and my partner needs to pick up from that exact energy.
If you are looking to book a Jugalbandi for your corporate event, concert, or private baithak, understand that this requires coordination. I typically prefer a rehearsal session with the co-artist if we have not played together before. This ensures that the technical elements, like the sound check for multiple instruments and the balance between the tabla and the accompanying instrument, are perfect. Whether it is a rhythmic interplay or a melodic fusion with a violin or flute, I bring the same dedication to the stage.
