Classical Tabla Accompaniment for Concerts and Recitals
I approach Sangat as a musical conversation. My focus is to provide rhythmic support that honors the raga and elevates the main performance.
Performing at a 'Kala' concert, providing tabla accompaniment for a talented sarod artist. The dark, intimate setting allowed for a deeply focused musical dialogue.
A moment of intense concentration during a trio concert at NCPA Mumbai. Accompanying both sitar and sarod requires careful listening to support two distinct melodic voices.
A divine experience at the Sankat Mochan Sangeet Samaroh in Varanasi, accompanying a sitar recital. The energy of this sacred place is unlike any other.
Accompanying the brilliant sitarist Roopa Panesar for a rendition of Raag Charukeshi, recorded for Darbar Player. Her melodic grace is a joy to accompany.
Providing tabla sangat for a santoor recital at the Darbar Festival. The Jhalla section, with its fast-paced rhythm, is a thrilling and meditative experience for both the performers and the audience.
A clip from a concert with the legendary slide guitar maestro, Pandit Debashish Bhattacharya. Accompanying his unique instrument is a wonderful challenge in rhythmic adaptation.
On stage with the wonderful Ustad Sabir Khan ji on Sarangi for the '3 Sur Aur 3 Taal' concert. The sarangi's voice is so close to the human voice, making it a soulful experience to accompany.
Performing with my brother, the gifted flautist S. Akash, at the Taal Chakra festival in Pune. The interplay between the flute's melody and the tabla's rhythm is always lively and engaging.
A moment of musical exchange with Guruji Padma Bhushan Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty ji during a vocal recital in Hyderabad. Accompanying a vocalist of his stature is a profound lesson in itself.
In the divine presence of Lord Shiva's idol while accompanying Pandit Niladri Kumar ji. The spiritual ambiance of the venue added a deep layer of devotion to the music.
About Classical Accompaniment (Sangat)
When I provide Sangat, I prioritize seamless integration with the main artist. I arrive at least 60 minutes before the performance for mic placement and sound checks. I carry multiple dayans to match the specific pitch of the vocalist or instrumentalist, ensuring my accompaniment is in perfect harmony.
Sangat is the art of listening. Before a single beat is played, I focus on understanding the raga and the unique style of the main artist. Whether providing accompaniment for vocalists, or instrumentalists like sitar, sarod, and santoor players, my role is to be a shadow to the melody. I follow traditional stage protocols, focusing on subtlety and support rather than taking the spotlight. My repertoire spans various taals, adapted in real time to the performance flow. For festivals or chamber concerts, I ensure my equipment is tuned precisely to the artist's pitch. I treat every stage as a space for devotion, bringing the same dedication to a chamber concert as I do to a major festival stage. I perform frequently across Mumbai and travel for concerts across India, always maintaining the sanctity of the classical tradition.
Yashwant Vaishnav
Music is my worship, and tabla is my constant companion. I have been blessed to learn under legends like Ustad Zakir Hussain ji and my Guruji, Pt. Yogesh Samsi ji, and I carry those lessons to every stage I step onto.
