About Ghazal & Vocal Accompaniment

When I play for a ghazal or thumri, my role is not just about keeping the beat. It is about listening to the singer's pauses and breathing with the poetry. I adjust my tabla volume and intensity in real time, ensuring the rhythm acts as a bridge for the vocalist to express the emotions behind the lyrics rather than overpowering them.

Accompanying a vocalist requires a deep understanding of the genre. Whether it is the soft, poetic demands of a ghazal or the elaborate structures of a khayal, my goal is to remain a supportive rhythmic partner.

My Approach to Accompaniment

  • Listening First: I do not just keep time. I listen to the singer's style, the specific raga they are exploring, and the way they phrase their lyrics. This allows me to provide percussion that feels like a conversation.
  • Technical Adaptability: I am comfortable with complex rhythmic cycles like Jhoomra, Tilwada, or Deepchandi, adapting my playing style to match the mood of the composition. For thumris and semi-classical forms, I bring a lighter, more delicate touch to support the expressive nature of the performance.
  • Sawal Jawab (Call and Answer): This is one of the most rewarding aspects of live performance. I engage in improvisational exchanges with the vocalist, which creates an instant connection with the audience and makes the performance feel organic and spontaneous.

Why the Context Matters

I treat every setting differently. In an intimate baithak in a Bengaluru home, the acoustic balance and the close proximity of the audience allow for subtle tonal variations that you might lose in a large concert hall. My equipment is tuned specifically for the vocalist's scale, ensuring a perfect blend. Whether you are hosting a private evening with friends or organizing a formal concert, I ensure my tabla setup and etiquette fit the event's atmosphere seamlessly.
