Inspirations & Explorations: The SJK Architectural Journey

bySJK ArchitectsDesign Studio at Colaba, MumbaiView full gallery

Architecture is a conversation with the past and the land. This collection is where we gather the fragments—from the ancient stone steps of Hampi to the quiet textures of our workshop—that shape our buildings.

A visual journey through the 'Portals of Latur'. We find endless inspiration in the vernacular architecture of India, from the vibrant colors of the doors to the intricate carvings and hand-painted motifs that tell a story of place and time.

A compilation of staircases from our various projects. We see staircases not just as functional elements but as sculptural opportunities to play with light, material, and movement, from grand public stairs to intimate spiral ones.

A fast-paced glimpse into the diverse locations that excite and inspire us to design, from the ancient stone steps of Hampi to the arched corridors of Latur and the lush landscapes of Alibaug.

A close-up of a stone block, showing the raw texture and the clean cut line. We are fascinated by the inherent beauty of natural materials and the process of shaping them.

The dramatic, layered face of a stone quarry. The natural patterns, colors, and sheer scale of the earth are a powerful source of architectural inspiration for us.

A detail of a traditional tiled roof meeting a simple white wall, with an old tree trunk in the foreground. This simple juxtaposition of natural and man-made elements is something we often explore in our work.

About this collection

Behind every finished room lies a series of choices that never make it into the final photographs. When we design for your space, we do not just pick a material; we visit the quarry to hand-select the stone, or we mix raw cement and POP on-site to create that specific, imperfect grey wash texture. Architecture is not just about the final structure; it is about how we arrive there together, obsessing over the details that make a house feel like a home.

Our design philosophy begins with observation. We look at the vernacular architecture of places like Latur—the way doors frame a space or how light hits a wall—and translate those lessons for contemporary Indian homes. Whether it is a luxury villa in Alibaug or an urban renovation in Mumbai, we treat the site as a living entity. We often build around existing trees, letting the landscape dictate the structure rather than forcing the building onto the earth. This involves complex engineering, like timber post and beam frames on black cotton soil, which allows us to tread lightly on the land.

Our process is deeply hands-on. We build physical models of every project, from residential homes to weekend retreats, to test how light and shadow move through the volumes. We believe that when you work with artisans and source materials locally, you create spaces that feel lived-in and honest from day one. It is a slow, thoughtful process, but it ensures that your home is not just a building, but a sanctuary that resonates with your personal story. We are not here to build monuments; we are here to craft spaces that invite conversation and stillness.

We are architects who believe a building is an organism, not just a structure. We spend our time in quarries and workshops, obsessed with how a stone is cut or how a jaali catches the afternoon sun. If you want a space that breathes and tells your story, we are here to build it with you.
