Weekend Retreats and Homes in Nature
A home should not just sit on the land, it should belong to it. We design weekend retreats that blur the boundaries between architecture and the outdoors, creating spaces where you can reset, breathe, and connect with the landscape.
In 'The Leaf House', the living space opens completely to the wooden deck and surrounding trees. The curved concrete roof provides shelter while feeling as light and organic as a canopy of leaves.
A central courtyard in 'The Tropical House' is built around a flowering frangipani tree. The vibrant blue wall and terracotta roof tiles are elements of vernacular architecture, reinterpreted in a modern context.
A contemporary pitched-roof home in Alibaug, designed to sit lightly on the land. The structure uses glue-laminated timber and large overhangs to respond to the local climate and blend with the rural setting.
The bedroom in 'The Leaf House' is a serene space where the interior flows into the exterior. The unique form of the roof and the large glass openings make you feel completely immersed in nature.
The entrance to 'The Tropical House' features a simple gravel courtyard with a sculptural art piece and a wall of niches, creating a tranquil threshold between the outside world and the home within.
A window in a simple white corridor frames the lush green foliage outside, turning the view into a living piece of art. A traditional wooden sculpture stands guard, connecting the space to its cultural roots.
This short film tells the story of 'The Leaf House', from the initial inspiration of dried leaves on the site to the final built form, where architecture and nature are one.
About this collection
When we approach a weekend home, our first step is never the blueprint. It is the site survey. We map the existing trees, the wind directions, and the soil type on your land before we draw a single line. For our projects in Alibaug, this often means using hybrid structures like timber and steel to ensure the house rests lightly on the ground, minimizing the need for heavy concrete foundations and preserving the natural topography.
Architecture That Breathes
Our approach to weekend retreats is deeply rooted in climate-responsive design. In the coastal and rural settings where we often work, the goal is to create a structure that functions as a filter for light and air. We utilize passive cooling strategies—like large overhangs, cross-ventilation, and courtyards—to keep your home cool without relying solely on air conditioning.
The Choice of Materials
We advocate for materials that age gracefully with the landscape. You will see us often working with exposed cement, oxide flooring, and timber frames. By using glue-laminated timber or steel-timber frames, we reduce the use of concrete mammoths that often dominate construction sites. This method is not just aesthetic; it is structural. It allows us to build around mango trees or navigate uneven terrain without compromising the integrity of the home.
Designing for the Full Experience
Whether you are looking for a weekend villa, a cabin in the woods, or a nature-focused retreat, we design for the moments in between. We focus on spatial flow, creating decks, verandas, and open pavilions that pull the outdoors in. It is about creating a space where the rhythm of your day is set by the sun and the changing seasons rather than the clock.
Our Process
We are involved from the initial concept to the site supervision. For holiday homes located away from the city, we plan logistics carefully to ensure that the quality of execution matches the design intent. We believe that if a space is built thoughtfully, it becomes a sanctuary that lets you think clearly and create freely.
SJK Architects
We are a collective of architects who see buildings as organisms that must make friends with their neighbours. Whether it is a timber-framed pavilion in Alibaug or a stone cottage in the hills, we believe a home is a place where you should feel just as connected to the wind and the trees as you do to the walls around you.
