From Sketch to Structure: Our Architectural Design Process

Every building begins as a conversation. Here is a look into our process, where initial hand-sketched ideas evolve into concrete realities through a focus on site topography, local light, and structural function.

An under-construction view of a boutique hotel in Chikmagalur, where the concrete form is shaped to frame the breathtaking mountain vistas.

The skeletal roof structure of the hotel begins to take shape, revealing the open, airy design that will eventually shelter the main terrace and pool.

Concrete pillars stand ready on site, mapping out the future corridors and water channels that will define the holiday retreat's ground floor.

The play of light and shadow is already evident on this unfinished balcony, as sunlight filters through the temporary scaffolding and roof structure.

A completed veranda with terracotta tiles and strong columns shows the progression from raw structure to finished space, with shadows creating patterns on the floor.

About this collection

We don't just draft blueprints; we map out site stories. Whether it’s integrating boulders into a Chikmagalur hotel corridor or plotting circulation for a brewery, our process begins by understanding the land itself. When you choose to work with us, expect us to start by questioning the site’s topography and wind patterns before we draw a single wall, ensuring the structure feels like it grew from the earth rather than being placed on it.

Architecture is a conversation between the environment and the built form. At Mistry Architects, our design journey starts long before the foundation is poured. It begins with sketches—messy, exploratory, and intuitive lines that capture the initial spirit of a space.

Take our work on the boutique hotel in Chikmagalur. The process didn't start with a floor plan; it started with understanding how to frame the mountain vistas without obstructing the view. We sketched site lines, marked where the sun hits the terrace, and planned the jali porch to catch the breeze. These drawings weren't just diagrams; they were instructions on how the building should breathe.

When we move from sketches to detailed structural planning—like our master planning for the GIFT City exhibition center or the zoning for the Toit brewery—we prioritize the flow. We map out circulation routes that separate guest movement from service areas, ensuring the functional architecture supports the experience.

Our Design Phases:

  • Concept & Context: We analyze your site’s sun paths and vegetation, sketching massing diagrams that keep the landscape intact.
  • Structural Coordination: We don’t hide our bones. Whether it’s the steel trusses of a roof or exposed concrete pillars, we design them to be part of the building’s aesthetic.
  • Material Curation: We decide early on whether to use wire-cut bricks, local stone, or adaptive reuse elements, ensuring the final structure feels grounded in its location.
  • Site Supervision: We are present on-site during the execution phase. A building is only as good as the understanding of the design intent by the site team, so we bridge that gap with regular visits.

This transition from paper to site is where the magic happens, and it’s a phase we invite you to be part of throughout the journey.
