Kathak Reflections and Artistic Musings

Beyond the steps and rhythms, art is an inquiry. Here are some moments of reflection from my practice and the stories that shape my dance.

A moment from a past performance, shared on World Dance Day. I believe that while dance requires immense dedication, the happiness it brings is priceless.

A reflective moment during a photoshoot. As the great Guru Birju Maharaj said, dance helps us find a balance between mind and soul, connecting us to our own natural rhythm.

About Additional Work & Musings

These snapshots capture the 'Rasa', that fleeting moment of bliss when the rhythm and the story align. Whether it is an archival snippet or a contemplative pause between sets, I share these to show that dance is not just muscle memory, but a dialogue with yourself. If you are looking to understand the 'why' before the 'how' of Kathak, these moments define my approach.

In my practice, the line between dance and storytelling is blurred. The images you see here are more than just documentation of my work; they are evidence of my attempt to integrate ancient Shastras with contemporary movement.

My philosophy is rooted in the belief that dance is a form of 'moving meditation.' When you study with me, we do not just focus on the Jaipur Gharana syllabus or the precision of the Chakkar. We focus on the 'why'.

  • The Intersection of Harikatha and Dance: You will notice many of my performances involve narrative elements. I believe that a dancer must be a storyteller. This is why I integrate Harikatha techniques, vocal music, and rhythmic Padhant into our training.
  • Archival Wisdom: I regularly revisit archival footage, not just for nostalgia, but to study the flow and the 'Rasa'—the essence of the piece. I encourage my students to do the same, as it helps in internalizing the art form rather than just mimicking it.
  • Accessible Learning: Whether you join me in Bengaluru studios like Yuva Patha or connect via our virtual programs, my goal is to guide you toward a balance between mind and soul. We use yoga-based conditioning to prepare the body for the rigors of Kathak, ensuring the technique supports your well-being.

This collection is a reminder that art is a journey of constant refinement. If you find a connection with this approach, I invite you to join our upcoming sessions.

I am Sharat. I do not just teach steps; I help you find stillness in movement through the tradition I inherited from my family. If you want to explore Kathak as a path to mindfulness rather than just a performance, let us connect.
