Kathak Practice and Choreography Sessions
Step into our studio space where technique meets tradition. This is where we break down complex rhythmic structures, refine footwork, and find the true essence of Kathak.
A moment of reflection during a choreography session. The studio is a space for creation and refinement. It requires a warrior spirit to push through limitations and deliver your best work.
Practicing a 'yati' composition by my Guruji. This particular piece is unique because the rhythm flows continuously, even through the 'Sam', which is typically the point of resolution.
The synergy between a dancer and a live tabla player is essential to Kathak. Here I am practicing with live music, which elevates the energy and spontaneity of the dance.
A view of a workshop in progress. It is a joy to see so many students gathered, dedicated to learning and growing together in this art form.
This clip captures the conclusion of a month-long intensive workshop, which included 72 hours of dance. We ended with a special session on tabla designed specifically for Kathak dancers.
Working on choreography with my students. I guide them to find their own expression within the structure of the composition, as dance is the ultimate form of personal indulgence and joy.
About Inside the Studio: Practice & Choreography
I often tell my students that a studio needs just two things: a mirror and a dustbin. The mirror reveals the flaws in your posture or rhythm, and the dustbin helps you discard them. We do not chase perfection here; we chase clarity through this constant cycle of observation and refinement.
In our studio sessions, the focus is on the Jaipur Gharana lineage passed down from my Guru, Pt. Rajendra Gangani. We approach Kathak as both a physical discipline and an intellectual exercise. This means our training goes beyond simple choreography.
We integrate the Shastras—ancient texts on dance and drama—to provide a theoretical foundation for the movements. Students learn the mathematics behind the Taals, the discipline of Padhant (vocal percussion), and the physical conditioning required for Chakkars. Whether you are in our Bengaluru centers like Yuva Patha or Yours Truly Theatre, or joining us virtually, the methodology remains the same: we work on yoga-based warm-ups to build core strength and flexibility, followed by intensive footwork training.
Kathak is not just about the performance you see on stage; it is about the hours of repetition and the quiet moments of learning in the studio. We focus on the synergy between the dancer and the rhythm, often utilizing live tabla accompaniment to ensure you understand how music dictates movement. By the time we move into choreography, you are not just memorizing steps, but understanding the narrative and the emotion behind them.
Sharat Prabhath
I see Kathak as a moving meditation rather than just a performance art. My sessions connect my family’s artistic legacy with a structured, modern teaching approach to make this ancient form accessible to you.
