Guru Parampara: The Classical Lineage Behind My Kathak
Tradition is the foundation of my art. Here is a look at the lineage, teachers, and values that shape my Kathak and Harikatha practice.
Standing with my Guru, Pt. Rajendra Gangani, on Guru Poornima. His guidance is the light that illuminates my path as both a dancer and a teacher.
Receiving the traditional 'tilak' from my Guruji. This gesture signifies the passing of knowledge and blessings from the teacher to the student.
The sacred thread ceremony on Guru Poornima, a day to honor the teacher. Being able to learn from him in person is a blessing I am forever grateful for.
Welcoming my Guruji to our studio in Bangalore. His presence is a healing force, and having him here for a workshop was a festive occasion for all of us.
A collage of cherished moments with my Guru. He has transformed my perspective on art and life, and I am forever indebted to him for the light he has brought into my life.
A video of my great-grandfather, a renowned Harikatha artist, performing at the age of 94. I am humbled to carry forward this rich family legacy of storytelling and classical arts.
About Guru Parampara: My Lineage
In our tradition, knowledge is not merely transferred through books but through direct energy and shared practice. When I stand with my Guru, Pt. Rajendra Gangani, I am not just learning steps; I am absorbing a century-old rhythm. This connection defines my Kathak—it is about preserving a specific frequency of movement and devotion that goes far beyond what can be taught in a standard classroom setting.
The concept of Guru Parampara (lineage) is the heartbeat of Indian classical arts. It is the unbroken chain of masters and disciples that ensures the authenticity of the Jaipur Gharana style. My practice is built upon this foundation. Whether I am teaching a beginner in an Indiranagar studio or performing a complex Harikatha narration, I rely on the discipline instilled in me by my father and my Guruji.
Why Lineage Matters in Kathak
Many students ask why I stress the 'Shastra' or theoretical texts so much. It is because dance without theory is just movement. By understanding the Sanskrit roots and the mathematical precision of Taal, we transform practice into a form of meditation. When you train with me, you are not just memorizing choreography. You are learning the vocabulary of a language that has been spoken by dancers for generations.
My Training Approach
My classes in Bangalore blend this deep-rooted tradition with the practical realities of modern life. We focus on:
- Jaipur Gharana Technique: Emphasizing footwork, intricate Chakkars, and the unique energy of our lineage.
- Rhythmic Intelligence: Learning the science behind the beats, known as Padhant.
- Abhinaya: Connecting the movement to the story, which is essential for capturing that feeling of 'Rasa' or bliss.
Whether you join my in-person sessions at Yuva Patha or connect via our virtual programs, you are entering a space where the focus is on growth, patience, and connecting with yourself through the art. This is not about being perfect from day one. It is about showing up and allowing the rhythm to ground you.
