Sharat Prabhath: Kathak Dance & Harikatha Performances
I view Kathak not just as dance, but as a moving meditation. Here is a glimpse into my journey with rhythm, storytelling, and the classical arts.
This is a glimpse of my return to the stage after a long pause. For me, Kathak is more than just movement; it is a profound expression of stories and emotions. This performance captures the energy and grace that I bring into my teaching.
Here is a look inside one of my group classes. I guide students of all ages and backgrounds, focusing on building a strong foundation in a supportive environment. We learn together, finding joy and stillness in the rhythm of Kathak.
In my classes, we explore the stories behind the dance. This is a short 'Harikatha' or story session where I connect ancient wisdom from the Upanishads to the practice of Kathak, explaining how the syllable 'Da' holds different meanings for gods, demons, humans, and artists.
I am happy to announce new Kathak batches are open for admission. Whether you prefer weekend or weekday classes, you can begin your journey into this beautiful art form with us.
A cherished moment receiving blessings from my Guru, the legendary Pt. Rajendra Gangani. My teaching is deeply rooted in this Guru-Shishya parampara, or lineage, ensuring an authentic and traditional learning experience.
Finding 'Sukoon' or peace through the swirls and rhythm of Kathak. I believe this art form is a moving meditation, a way to find a quiet center in a loud world. This is a core feeling I hope to impart to all my students.
The sound of ghungroos is the heartbeat of Kathak. This is a close look at the basic footwork, or 'tatkar', that forms the foundation of our practice. Every step is a note in the symphony of dance.
About Featured
You have seen the technique here—the footwork, the abhinaya, and the rhythm. When I teach, my goal is to break down these complex Jaipur Gharana movements into digestible steps so you can build your own foundation, whether you are a complete beginner or looking to refine your practice in Bengaluru.
Kathak is often misunderstood as merely a series of spins and speed, but it is fundamentally a language. In my classes, we move beyond just counting steps. I focus on the 'Shastra'—the ancient texts—that inform our movements, ensuring that every 'Chakkar' and 'Tatkar' is grounded in purpose and awareness.
My Approach to Learning
I offer training in the Jaipur Gharana style, passed down to me by my Guru, Pt. Rajendra Gangani. This lineage is the backbone of my instruction. We work on:
- Nritta (Pure Dance): Developing the technical precision of rhythm, Taal, and footwork.
- Abhinaya (Expression): Learning to tell stories through subtle muscle movements and facial expressions, a core element of my Harikatha performances.
- Physical Conditioning: Using yoga-based warm-ups to build the core strength and flexibility required for sustained practice.
Where We Learn
I conduct in-person sessions across Bengaluru at locations like Yuva Patha in Jayanagar, Yours Truly Theatre in Indiranagar, and Suchitra Cinema in Banashankari. For those who cannot make it to a studio, I also run interactive virtual batches where we adapt traditional techniques to the home environment, ensuring you still receive real-time feedback on your posture and rhythm.
Whether you are looking to connect with your cultural roots or simply seeking a form of mindfulness, there is a space for you. We focus on the process, not just the performance. If you have been looking for a way to turn movement into stillness, I invite you to join us for a session.
