About The Art of Kalaripayattu
You might be used to the static holds of yoga, but Kalari is where that stillness finds its fire. In our workshops, we do not just drill movements. We focus on how your body handles transitions. Whether you are a yoga practitioner looking to improve your hip mobility or a fitness enthusiast seeking something functional, this practice teaches you to move with intention rather than just mimicking a pose.
Kalaripayattu is often called the mother of all martial arts, but at Om YogaShala, we treat it as a movement meditation. It is about prana (life force) in motion. When we practice the foundational footwork known as Chuvadukal, we are not just learning a step sequence. We are conditioning the joints for longevity and stability.
The animal postures—lion, elephant, wild boar—are deceptively challenging. They require a kind of raw, grounded strength that simple gym training often ignores. Carolina Prada, who leads these sessions, brings authentic training from Kalarigram. She breaks down the complex sequences so that even if you have zero background in martial arts, you can safely explore these movements.
Our sessions are structured to be accessible. We offer a 3-day in-person intensive in our Vasant Vihar studio, which is perfect if you want hands-on correction in a climate-controlled space. For those at home, our online hybrid courses mix the structure of Vinyasa Krama with the dynamic flow of Kalari. It is a complete system to balance your vata and build functional power. You do not need to be an athlete to begin. You just need to be curious about how your body moves when it is truly engaged.
