Our Shala: A Sanctuary for Your Yoga Practice
More than just a studio, this is a home for your practice. Step away from the noise and find stillness in a space dedicated to traditional Ashtanga and mindful living.
The light within our shala, and the light within each of us. Starting the day in silence and with movement, I am filled with gratitude for this practice, these teachings, and this community.
A short tour of our sacred space. I am grateful for the practice of yoga, for my teachers who have lit the path, and for the divine blessings that fill this shala with peace and grace.
A beautiful new addition to our shala, a gift from a student. This idol of Lord Buddha under the Bodhi Tree is a precious reminder of the path to enlightenment, peace, and calm.
A young child points to the images of the gurus in our lineage. It is a blessing to see the next generation connecting with the tradition and the teachers who have guided this path of Ashtanga yoga.
The Guru Purnima moon, playing hide and seek with the clouds. Like my teachers, the moon teaches me patience, respect, and grace. I am grateful for all the teachers in my life, seen and unseen.
The full moon, a time for our bodies to rest and rejuvenate. In the Ashtanga tradition, we honor the cycles of the moon by taking rest from our asana practice on days of the full and new moon.
About Our Shala: A Sanctuary for Practice
My shala in JP Nagar is not a gym. We do not use loud music, and you will not find rows of mirrors here distracting you from your breath. Instead, this is a quiet, dedicated space where we keep the practice traditional and simple, allowing you to focus entirely on your movement and the stillness within.
When I opened this shala in 2006, my intention was to build a 'kula,' a community where the focus is on the journey, not the outcome. The environment we have created here is central to that mission. You will find an altar with fresh flowers, warm lighting, and a setting that encourages turning your attention inward.
Everything in this space serves the practice. From the cushioning provided for longer meditation sessions to the open, unobstructed floor space for asana, every detail is considered to support your sadhana. It is a place to arrive as you are—whether you are a beginner seeking a safe environment to learn or a practitioner looking to deepen your discipline.
We also use this space for more than just physical movement. It hosts our Kirtan chanting circles, philosophy deep-dives, and community gatherings. Because we cap our batch sizes, the shala never feels crowded. It retains a sense of intimacy and peace that is becoming rare in our busy city. If you are looking for a consistent, supportive home for your practice in Bengaluru, I invite you to join us on the mat.
Nitesh Batra
I started this space in 2006 to create a home for those seeking stillness. This is not a place for quick fixes or perfect poses; it is where we show up, breathe, and grow as a community together.
