Kalaripayattu Classes for Strength and Discipline
We bring the ancient Indian martial art of Kalaripayattu to our JP Nagar shala. Join us for guided sessions that focus on body mechanics, animal postures, and finding fluidity in movement, suitable for all ages and skill levels.
A glimpse into the discipline and dedication of Kalaripayattu practice. This traditional art form combines powerful movements, graceful forms, and deep focus, offering a holistic path to physical and mental strength.
About Kalaripayattu: The Way of the Warrior
You don't need to be an athlete to start here. These sessions are kept small, usually around 10 to 15 people, so our instructor Sumeet can watch your form and ensure you’re moving safely. We focus on the foundational animal postures and ground-based movements, ensuring you build strength at your own pace rather than pushing for performance.
Kalaripayattu is often called the mother of all martial arts, but in our shala, we approach it as a moving meditation. It is about waking up the body and clearing the mind through rigorous, structured movement. Whether you are a beginner looking to build functional strength or someone interested in the heritage of this discipline, the practice offers a way to reconnect with your physical potential.
What to expect in a session
Each 60 to 90-minute session is designed to be accessible. We start by grounding ourselves—a necessary step before engaging in the more dynamic work. You will learn the basics of Kalari animal postures—mimicking movements of the lion, elephant, and wild boar—which help in developing deep core stability and agility. We also integrate floor work and improvisation, which encourages you to let go of stiff, repetitive exercise patterns and find a more fluid, organic way of moving.
Safety and focus
We believe that growth comes from consistency, not intensity. Because our batches are capped at 15 participants, you receive personal guidance on your alignment. This is particularly important for newcomers. We prioritize safety and sustainable progress, ensuring that you understand the mechanics of every strike and block before advancing.
Why we teach this here
At our shala, we view martial arts not as a competitive sport, but as a form of sadhana (spiritual practice). Just as we focus on breath and stillness in our yoga classes, Kalaripayattu teaches us to remain calm and focused even when the body is in motion. It builds the warrior spirit—discipline, resilience, and quiet confidence—that carries over into your life outside the studio walls. Come join us in JP Nagar to experience this ancient art for yourself.
