Transform your practice with Stick Yoga. Using a simple wooden prop as a guide, we focus on gently correcting your posture, releasing shoulder tension, and deepening your stretches in a calm, supportive environment.
This graphic explains the key benefits of Stick Yoga. The stick acts as a guide to help relieve stress in the neck and shoulders, improve balance, and find correct posture alignment in various asanas.
A video compilation from one of my Stick Yoga workshops. You can see how students of different levels use the stick to support their balance, deepen stretches, and explore new variations of familiar poses.
A student in my workshop using the stick for support in a kneeling twist. This variation helps to open up the chest and shoulders while maintaining stability and proper spinal alignment.
Here, a student practices Utthita Trikonasana (Extended Triangle Pose) with a stick. The prop provides feedback for keeping the spine long and the arms in a straight line, enhancing the benefits of the pose.
Using the stick as an aid for a supported Ustrasana (Camel Pose). This modification allows for a deep, controlled backbend, making the pose more accessible and helping to open the heart and chest.
A student engages her core and leg muscles in this challenging seated balance pose, using the stick to assist with leverage and alignment. It's a great way to build strength and focus.
Students exploring a gentle side bend while kneeling, using the stick to guide the movement. This helps to stretch the side body and improve flexibility in the spine and shoulders.
A participant uses the wall and a stick for a deep backbend. This supportive setup allows for a safe exploration of spinal extension, helping to increase flexibility and release tension in the back.
About Stick Yoga (Danda Yoga): Align Your Spine
The stick is not just for support; it acts as a tactile guide to ensure your spine stays long and your alignment is precise. In my sessions, we focus on the subtle feedback the prop provides, helping you safely explore poses like Ustrasana (Camel Pose) or Utthita Trikonasana (Triangle Pose) with greater stability. Every workshop includes a 10-minute post-class Q&A, specifically for posture correction and troubleshooting those tricky alignment points you might be struggling with.
Why Practice Danda Yoga?
Many of us hold stress in our neck, shoulders, and upper back due to long hours at desks. The stick, or Danda, acts as an extension of your arms and a stabilizer for your spine. By holding the stick during asanas, you create a frame of reference that makes correct alignment intuitive rather than forced.
What to Expect in the Studio
These 75-minute sessions are held in my air-conditioned studio in Santacruz West. We limit the class size to 15 students to ensure everyone gets enough space and personal attention. You don't need to bring your own equipment; I provide the mats, blocks, and the bamboo sticks we use for the session.
Who Is This Workshop For?
Whether you are a complete beginner or a long-time practitioner, Stick Yoga is highly adaptable. If you are new to yoga, the stick provides a sense of security and balance that helps you get into poses without fear of falling or straining. For experienced students, it offers a way to intensify a stretch or challenge your core engagement in ways that a regular flow class might not.
