Yoga Kurunta: Rope Alignment Workshops in Bengaluru
Use ropes to safely decompress your spine, refine your alignment, and overcome the fear of inversions in a small, guided setting.
A sneak peek into the exclusive weekend Yoga Kurunta workshop at my center. Using ropes allows for a unique exploration of strength, alignment, and freedom of movement, making it a transformative experience for all participants.
Participants in my Yoga Kurunta workshop using the ropes to support and deepen their practice. This method allows for greater stability and extension, helping to open up the body in ways that are not always accessible on the mat alone.
A group of students exploring inversions during a Yoga Kurunta session. The ropes provide security and support, allowing practitioners to experience the benefits of being upside down, such as improved circulation and spinal decompression, with confidence.
Here, I am assisting a student with an inversion during the Yoga Kurunta workshop. The ropes are a fantastic tool for teachers to help students safely access and hold challenging postures while maintaining correct alignment.
Students practicing a supported backbend using the rope wall. This setup helps to open the chest and shoulders while protecting the lower back, demonstrating the therapeutic potential of Yoga Kurunta.
Another moment from our Yoga Kurunta workshop, capturing the focus and freedom that rope work brings. Here, students are working on a variation of Setu Bandhasana (Bridge Pose) with the support of the ropes.
Students practicing Trikonasana (Triangle Pose) variations with rope support to enhance their alignment and deepen the stretch. The ropes act as a guide, helping to create space and stability in the pose.
About this collection
Ropes allow you to hold postures longer to observe how your body responds, rather than forcing it into position. This external support lets the spine decompress naturally, providing the stability needed to attempt inversions you might otherwise find daunting.
Why Use Ropes?
In a standard mat practice, your muscles must do all the work to hold you up, which often leads to strain. Yoga Kurunta changes this. By using ropes attached to the wall, we externalize the alignment. You are no longer fighting gravity, but using it. This allows you to find geometric precision in poses like Trikonasana or Sarvangasana without the typical fear of falling or losing balance.
Spinal Decompression
One of the primary benefits of this method is traction. When you hang from the ropes, the weight of your body creates space between the vertebrae. For students with desk jobs or chronic back stiffness, this release is physically profound. It creates a level of openness that is difficult to achieve solely through floor work.
Our Approach at Chandra Layout
We keep these workshops small, with batches capped at 15 to 20 participants. This is not for a large group; it requires specific attention to ensure the ropes are used safely. We focus on:
- Safe Inversions: Learning headstands and handstands with rope support to remove hesitation.
- Precision: Using leverage to lock the body into correct alignment, which helps you understand the 'geometry' of each pose.
- Therapeutic Healing: Using the ropes to support backbends and twists, which can open the chest and shoulders while protecting the lower back.
This is a practical, physics-based approach to asana. If you are looking for a rigorous, methodical way to deepen your practice and understand your own physical limits, this is the session for you.
Yogavijnana
I began my career as an IIT engineer, but the logic I found in the Yoga Sutras brought me to this path. My Yoga Kurunta classes are not about performance, but about using props to reveal the geometry of your own body, making complex asanas accessible and safe.
