Traditional Shatkarma and Yogic Detox Programs
Real detoxification is more than a diet. It is about cleansing the body from the inside out using traditional Hatha Yoga purification techniques.
An overview of the body detox programs we teach. This graphic illustrates several Shatkarma techniques, including Shankha Prakshalana for intestinal cleansing and Jal Neti for clearing the nasal passages.
About Yogic Detox (Shatkarma)
Many students are curious but hesitant about Shatkarma. These ancient purification methods, such as Jal Neti for nasal cleansing or Shankha Prakshalana for intestinal flushing, require precise technique and personal supervision. I teach these practices in a controlled environment during our 7-day Himalayan retreats, ensuring you learn the exact movements, posture, and breathing coordination so you can eventually maintain these habits safely at home.
Shatkarma translates to 'six actions,' and in traditional Hatha Yoga, these are essential for clearing the physical and energetic channels of the body. My approach at Spiritual Yoga Ashram is not about medical intervention, but about giving the body the space to reset itself.
The Techniques We Practice
- Jal Neti: A fundamental practice using warm saline water to cleanse the nasal passages. It is highly effective for sinus relief and improving breath flow.
- Shankha Prakshalana: A deep intestinal cleansing technique. This requires a full day of preparation and guided practice to ensure the digestive system is flushed gently.
- Vaman and Vastra Dhauti: These techniques address the upper digestive tract. While intense, when done correctly under guidance, they help release stored tension and heavy impurities from the stomach.
Why Practice in the Himalayas
Doing a detox in a city environment is challenging due to noise and environmental toxins. We hold these programs in our Himalayan retreats because the air is clean, and the environment supports the stillness needed for internal work. During our 7-day immersion, we integrate these cleansing actions with a Sattvic diet, meditation, and guided pranayama. This creates a holistic ecosystem where the body lets go of toxins and the mind finds rest.
Safety and Guidance
I emphasize that these are not quick fixes. They are powerful tools. I provide a personal Shatkarma kit to each participant and guide you through the process step-by-step. If you have specific health concerns, we discuss those first. Our goal is to make these ancient methods accessible for the modern lifestyle so you can carry the benefits of a light, energized body long after the retreat ends.
