Our Approach to Musical Learning for Children
Welcome to our musical world. We use play, rhythm, and storytelling to help children build a lifelong friendship with Indian classical music, entirely free from pressure and competition.
Our music classes are a whirlwind of activity. We combine singing, rhythm games, and storytelling to build a strong foundation in Hindustani music, all while keeping your child engaged, moving, and smiling. This is a space to spark curiosity, improve focus, and develop listening skills in the most joyful way.
"It has been a wonderful journey for her to know music, learn music and more importantly to like music as a hobby." Hearing this from a parent, who later joined our adult classes herself, means the world to us. We strive to create a nurturing, non-competitive space where the love for music blossoms naturally.
Welcome to "Jungle Jugalbandi," one of our most loved musical adventures. In this parent-toddler workshop, we journey through the forest with songs and stories, meeting musical animals and exploring Indian instruments. It’s a perfect summer activity for your little one to discover rhythm and sound.
Here we are, leading a "Folk Music of India" workshop at the prestigious NMACC Bachpan event. It was a joy to guide so many young music lovers through the rhythms and melodies of our country's diverse folk traditions, with children dancing and singing along.
This is what our parent-toddler classes are all about: connection. A teacher leads a simple Hindi finger-play song, and the whole room, filled with children and their parents, joins in. It’s in these shared moments of play and music that early learning and bonding happen so beautifully.
"The ultimate goal is to use music as a tool to really help one to connect with themselves and their environment." In this interview, our co-founder Kamakshi shares the core philosophy behind The Sound Space. We believe music is a powerful catalyst for growth at any age.
This is our mission in a single picture. We, the sister-duo behind The Sound Space, stand proudly before our 'Sound Space on Wheels' bus. Our goal is to take music education to underserved communities, ensuring every child has the chance to experience the joy and growth that music brings.
This is why we do what we do. One of our little students took her music lesson home, becoming the "teacher" and making sure her mom was singing the sargam correctly. When music becomes a part of their play and imagination, we know we've sparked a lifelong friendship with the arts.
We love taking our music workshops outdoors. Here's a glimpse of our "Jungle Jugalbandi" session at the Festival of Play in Hyderabad, where we created a stage under the open sky for children and parents to explore sound, story, and movement together.
A powerful image from our annual student showcase, 'Sakhya', at the iconic Royal Opera House. Over 125 of our students, from toddlers to teens, came together on one stage to celebrate music and community. This is a testament to their hard work and the collective spirit of The Sound Space family.
About Featured
In our workshops, we do not start with scales; we start with stories. We use a method we call musical storytelling, where we weave basic sur (notes) and taal (rhythm) into familiar games, animal sounds, and movement. By the time your child realizes they are learning Hindustani classical concepts, they are already deeply engaged with the instruments, making the learning process feel like play rather than a lesson.
Building a Friendship with Music
At The Sound Space, we believe music is a language, not a subject to be mastered through drilling. Our classes are designed to be a safe, inclusive space for children to express themselves. Whether it is a parent-toddler session where you bond over shakers and songs, or our immersive music camps for older children, the focus remains the same: building confidence and listening skills.
Why Our Approach Works
We avoid the standard 'perform-or-fail' culture. Instead, we create a non-competitive environment where:
- Active Participation is Key: Children aren't just sitting still. They are moving, playing instruments, and exploring rhythm through their whole body.
- Indian Classical Foundations: We introduce the basics of Raags and Swaras through fun, relatable themes like 'Jungle Jugalbandi' or folk music from across India.
- Emotional Well-being: We use music as a tool to help children focus, relax, and connect with their environment. It is about how they feel, not how perfect the note sounds.
Where We Are
We run sessions across Mumbai, from Worli and Tardeo to Bandra and Colaba. Our classes happen in sound-treated studios and centers with soft flooring, ensuring a safe, sensory-friendly environment for your little ones.
