Handcrafted Pottery Tools Built for Your Hands
Stop struggling with generic, mass-produced pottery tools. I design and build my own tools right here in Byculla, focusing on the balance, grip, and durability that Indian potters actually need.
Here you can see one of our handcrafted tools in action, being used to refine the shape of a clay Ganesha sculpture. Having the right tool for the job, one that feels comfortable and performs well, is essential for both sculptural and functional pottery.
About Handcrafted & Custom Pottery Tools
You know how a trimming tool feels slightly off when you buy it off the shelf? That is because it was never designed for your specific grip. I hand-fabricate our 'Ajit Series' tools using seasoned teak and high-carbon steel, balanced specifically for the way you move at the wheel. When you use a tool that is weighted correctly, you spend less time fighting your equipment and more time focusing on your form.
Why Custom Matters in Pottery
Most mass-produced tools are made to satisfy a general market, not a potter's hand. When you are trimming a foot ring or paddle-forming a clay pot, the tool becomes an extension of your finger. If it is too light or the steel is too soft, you lose precision.
The Ajit Series Approach
I created the Ajit Series because I wanted to solve the problems I faced for years. Here is what makes them different:
- Material Science: We use local, seasoned hardwoods like Teak or Sheesham for handles. These woods naturally resist water and provide a grip that does not slip, even when your hands are covered in slip.
- High-Carbon Steel: Unlike the aluminum loops that dull after a few pots, our blades are crafted from high-carbon steel. They hold a sharp edge much longer, giving you cleaner cuts on leather-hard clay.
- Balance & Weight: A tool should feel grounded. We test the weight of each paddle and trimming loop in the studio, ensuring they have the heft required for consistent compression without causing hand fatigue.
Customization & Feedback
Pottery is a dialogue between you and the clay. If you have a specific requirement, such as a custom trimming loop shape or a paddle with a unique profile, I can make it for you. This is a working studio, not a retail outlet. Everything here is built to be used daily, and I am happy to tweak designs based on the feedback of students who work here every day. Whether you are doing intricate hand-building or high-speed wheel throwing, having the right gear changes your process entirely.
Studio White & Gray
I am Sandeep, and I started this studio because I was tired of struggling with tools that just did not work for our conditions. Everything you see here is something I use daily, refined through years of my own 'riyaaz'. If you are serious about your craft, these tools are built to make your process smoother.
