Custom Kiln Firing and Pottery Workshops
Understand the rhythm of fire. Our Byculla studio offers access to a community kiln, designed for those who want to move beyond just throwing and learn the firing process.
Here I am discussing the philosophy behind my custom-built Gwari Baux kiln. For me, a kiln is not just equipment; it's a community tool that allows many artists to create a new body of work and learn through the shared practice of firing.
About Custom Kilns & Firing Knowledge
We operate a specialized Gwari Baux kiln right here in Byculla. Unlike standard commercial firing services where you simply drop off your pieces, we view the kiln as a community tool. You participate in the firing process to understand how the kiln manages heat and airflow, gaining the practical knowledge needed to eventually fire your own work.
Firing is not a one-time event, it is a practice. When I designed our Gwari Baux kiln, the goal was not just to have a machine, but to create a shared space where 10 to 15 potters could fire their work together. This design is highly efficient, using significantly less wood than traditional anagama kilns, making it a sustainable choice for consistent practice.
Why participate in our firing sessions?
- The Learning Curve: You cannot learn to fire after a single run. I often tell my students you need at least three or four firings to understand the nuances of the kiln. Each kiln has its own attitude and personality, and our sessions allow you to see that progression.
- Community Access: If you are a potter struggling to find kiln space in Mumbai, this is your solution. We open our firing cycles so you can load your work, monitor the temperatures, and learn the mechanics of the kiln in a group environment.
- Technical Knowledge: From wood selection to managing the firebox, you will learn the practical steps of kiln maintenance and efficiency.
We believe that until you have access to the facility and understand the process, your journey as a potter remains incomplete. Whether you are a beginner looking to fire your first set of bowls or a pro needing consistent stoneware firing, our studio is open for you to bring your work to life.
